Why wouldn’t another producer undercut them in that case, winning the lower end share of the market?

Serious question, does that make a difference if you heat your house using a thermostat anyway? The furnace should just run for less time to compensate. I have the same question about incandescent lightbulbs that seem to have been banned in

Timescale matters. This is often missing from the discussion. Warming up over a period of 10 thousand years is very different from same warming over a 100 years. Evolution in existing species assumes a certain pace of change in the environm

The median home price in the US is something like 300-400k. You’re on HN so I assume you’re in a tech-related field. If you can’t afford that in 10 years you’re doing something wrong.

There’s a large, large difference between your friend taking a screenshot and your friend authorizing a third party to any content they themselves can see. Scale and automation matters a lot.

Wondering what the economics of keeping single use cups but making them out of aluminum would look like? It’s one of the more valuable recyclables (to the point where homeless people will collect them to make some money).

Yep. Back in the hand-written letter days people must have thought “think how much time we would save if all this was automated and letters were delivered instantly!” Nope. We just send 10x more.

Not sure if that’s a good comparison: 1) the lab leak theory is only incidentally political since the two sides decided to make it into yet another hot button issue; 2) the media did cover the emails story extensively and it was never prema

There’s probably a good reason for it, but I’ve never understood why IPv6 couldn’t be fully backwards compatible. Then there would be no need to migrate - everyone would be already on IPv6 by definition.

That’s cute but it should also list “what if we kept developing countries in poverty (by denying quick and dirty industrialization that we ourselves enjoyed) for nothing”. The problem is hard because there are hard decisions to make.

It’s certainly interesting. My initial reaction is that “lifetime abstainers” is still a sufficiently distinct group from the continuum of moderate to heavy drinkers so there might be other confounders. I wonder if a study like that exists?

Yep. The old meme that “moderate drinking is better than no drinking at all” needs to die: these studies included people who didn’t drink for medical reasons, skewing the average health of the nondrinking cohort down.
