Exactly. And these things can be enforced by style checkers, so you don't even need to have good habits.

My recollection of Eiffel (from 10+ years ago) is that it's a more pure OO system where memory allocation isn't usually done raw, but more like Java or C# -- in the context of constructing an object. If you were writing OpenSSL in

He's right, but he's disingenuous in saying that random line duplication can't cause catastrophic problems in Eiffel. This very specific bug can't happen in Eiffel, but the class of bug can (bug caused by bad merge or a

It's not just the number of apps. It's the cumulative hours spent in them. As Gruber pointed out, Facebook is winning big here, and their apps are webby. As a category, games are used a lot and non webby. That would be the main co

He addressed this. It's not just HTTP, it's the inclusion of web views of browser content and linking between apps that makes something webby as opposed to just an internet-enabled app.

In the US, a court can also rule that you were de-facto employed. There was a famous case with Microsoft http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permatemp#Vizcaino_v._Microsoft This happens all of the time. Large US companies s

Did you not owe tax earned by CA companies consulting? It was my understanding that work in the state for an in-state client was income taxable (yes, that understanding came from my accountant). If yours thinks differently, I'd like an

This would be a problem if bitcoins were illiquid. They are not, so it's easily solved. The IRS simple rule is to treat all income as incurring tax on the moment it is received. They make allowances for things that are not liquid.

Ahh. By the time this information filtered to me in 2001/2, it became -- exercising options is always a taxable event. So that's the rule I live by and always make sure that there is a way to get cash simultaneously. I didn

It would not be prudent to exercise options that are not liquid. There is no benefit to doing that. You don't, for example, usually get meaningful voting rights with those shares.

I don't think this has anything to do with basis. The difference is that mining the coin is considered a tax event -- so you pay tax on the mined value -- with the cost being deductible. This makes sense because the coin is liquid an

The main thing that's a pain (extrapolating from stock) is if you buy and sell a lot. The tax is on the gain, but which one did you sell -- you need to keep track of each price you bought (and how many) and offset the amounts against

The IRS requires that you send them a form every year where you voluntarily tell them your income and sign it, swearing that it's true or risk penalties of fines or jail. How is that not enough control?

Taxes are typically paid on profit. BTC are not the only things with cost to acquire and carry (e.g. Cattle) -- and I believe those costs are taken into account.

That's a good question. You never realized the gain. What tax would you owe if you bought a diamond for $1, it went up to $10, and then got stolen. My guess would be nothing -- but I am not an accountant.

According the article this is not true. The tax event is turning the bitcoins into currency or spending them. So, the issue could be you have $1,000,000 of bitcoin, and you spend it. You now owe capital gains on the difference in price be

At large enough amounts, the IRS routinely investigates large accounts no matter how they are held. For example, in cocaine and cash. At some point you spend the money, and the difference in spending and taxes paid gets their attention.

Twitter is perhaps not the best idea for them, then. I would bet you can do a city level tag just based on who you follow. I certainly follow an order of magnitude more local people than any other place -- no tweets even necessary.

The location of my home is in public records and also the white pages. Anybody that wanted to do something bad to me via my address can find out where I live a lot easier than with Twitter. Also, they are only getting the city.
