A successful ECI must be officially addressed by the Commission. I agree they can just sweep it under the rug, but that's true of any "citizens' initiative" process.

Have you taken a look at FSharpPlus [0] ? It attempts at... "reproducing" higher-kinded polymorphism by means of abstract classes and operators for Functor, Monad, Applicative, and so on. It's a bit clunky (and if compilation

Not sticky notes, but plain old notebooks are what works best for me. About 10 years ago, moleskines + GTD [0] or Bullet Journal [1] were all the rage, but I only started appreciating such a system in grad school. Personally, I use a very i

School should also teach kids that they live in a complex society, where people have different backgrounds and, yes, different skill sets. I'm afraid that relegating "more gifted" kids (whatever this means) into a world of th

In Italy we are lucky to have a very good medieval historian, professor Alessandro Barbero, who has done a great deal of work to popularize "peasant history" among the general public. Most of his talks, are available on YouTube a

I think it's common military training in a lot of places. I'm italian, my dad did his service in the Engineering corps (Genio) and he told me the same story. No lock step while crossing bridges.

In OCaml and F# you can use `when`: match status with | n when n = not_found -> ...

Ouch, that's indeed pretty bad. I do expect `not_found = status` (that's how pattern matching works in several other languages), but it should be in its own scope, so that `not_found` is still `404` outside of the `match` block!

The point is, when you switch your phone operator, you don't have to pay the previous operator, in perpetuity, for the privilege of using your number without your calls being blocked.

Agree. I find it odd that so many people bring up this argument, like these companies aren't sitting on piles of cash that could be invested in systemic, human-in-the-loop improvements. (Ok, maybe except Twitter)

It is unfair from a consumer standpoint, but at least it would avoid Google's self-dug grave from getting deeper. From a B2B standpoint, it's just the name of the game. If a partner business is a strategic asset, you fast-track th

Of course Smaug does get referenced (in Fellowship, Frodo actually meets Glòin, i.e. Gimli's dad and one of Bilbo's fellow adventurers in The Hobbit). But still, it's fair to say that there are no actual dragons anywhere in

Checks and balances are part of any functioning democracy. Sure they make things less efficient, but once you take them out, you end up with a tyranny of the majority.

The Senate is intentionally designed to give more power to smaller states. Otherwise, the 10-15 biggest states could routinely gang up and pass federal legislation. Not a really nice outlook for a federal government.
