What's strange is that the very first impression I got from this is that it's OSS - and it's not - which doesn't make it particularly attractive for me as an 'alternative'. Anyone else feel this way?

Thank you for expressing this opinion. I know it’s not a popular one; but I’m 100% with you.

...smoking was never - and still isn’t - illegal. It’s just not relevant to my point. That’s harm reduction - which should be applied to drugs as well. Nothing to do with prohibition.

Because the early 1900’s prohibition and the war on drugs has totally shown us ridding us of something there is massive demand for totally works!

What the hell did they think would happen? Does anyone remember Tumblr? No? We’ve already experienced what it’s like for a brand to lose any relevance by abandoning the very community that made it successful.

HN, for whatever unbelievable reason - supports paywalled articles you can’t even read without subscriptions. I hardly think they’ll stop approving Twitter threads here. At least they’re readable without hacks or workarounds.

As a developer in Canadian Banking, I wonder how this will affect us. I work for a major bank relevant to this story, and I've honestly not heard anything about it internally.

Only now realized Pico-8 isn’t open source, or even free ? I was sincerely considering picking it up, but it actually surprised the shit out of me to find that it had a license cost. I’d rather just dev for a SEGA genesis or equivalent and

Return it and get a MacBook for around the same price. I don’t understand the point of iPad Pros being so powerful when they can’t - y’know - run even Apple’s own Pro software. (Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro) They’re mind-numbingly expensive

For years I kept QuickTime 7 Pro around after X came out. For the record, you can just say save -> change to MP4. But no, QuickTime X is hot garbage; and pretty much represents the kind of downgrade we got from iMovie HD to iMovie 7/

Wow, I guess we are polar opposites. I value every pixel of screen space I can have and loathe unnecessarily large UI elements that aren’t hideable. I was immediately turned off from the GUI myself when I saw this.

In my experience - AirDrop works as expected about 30% of the time. Enough to make it absolutely by far the worst option for file sharing. I don’t even consider it an ‘option’ anymore while transferring files. I’ll just upload it to my serv

Competitive FPS players would never pick this unit or similar up with an intent to play competitively on it. Competitive FPS playing is kinda like NASCAR. The hardware and configuration of hardware is critical if you actually want to win.

How is Switch emulation, these days? Do any major Switch emulators natively support JoyCons the way Dolphin does WiiMotes? (Do JoyCons even use regular ol' Bluetooth the way the WiiMotes do? EDIT: quick Google says yes :) )

There are similar rumours - and have been for years, before the creation of the actual 'Yakuza' game; about SEGA as well. The launch of the game did nothing to help those rumours, but certainly made it a bit more difficult to find
