Your method is sane, the problem is with RVM and rbenv, which everyone uses and depend on hacky implicit shell BS (rbenv less so, but it's still there). Build from source and use the full path to the interpreter is the only sane method

I am not familiar with IPcluster. But I have used pyro and execnet. I think I will continue to use execnet, since it seems more lightweight than IPcluster. But the web interface provided by ipython notebook is really attractive..
