Small programmable logic chips in the form of FPGAs or CLPDs (Complex Programmable Logic Devices) seem to be fairly popular in lowish-volume flashcart designs for old video game consoles as well.

Was it the PhD program? I know they usually notify people who were accepted in a phone call, so this kind of mistake is less likely to happen :).

Intel has a pattern of releasing variations of microarchitectures with higher core counts after their immediate successors have been announced/launched. Think Sandy Bridge-E after Ivy Bridge, Ivy Bridge-E after Haswell, and now Haswell

I'm not sure hiring more adjuncts would hurt the quality of (undergraduate) teaching. In my own experience adjuncts were far more dedicated to teaching than tenured professors who focus on their research without caring how low their te

I'm an undergrad at one of the outlier schools (UCLA) where a combination of the quarter system and a relatively conservative CS department make for an interesting undergrad curriculum. Our "CS 1" is taught in C++ and is most

I'm saddened that there's no kickass SID soundtrack for the game. That would have been a great way to show off the C64's technical advantages over the iPhone ;)

An approach that seems to work well for me is to use IRC as a way to communicate with groups people that mostly I know in person and share a common interest with. That way, I'm able to avoid a social pecking order or having to be &quot

As an undergrad, the main reason I would pursue a PhD would be to have some kind of intellectual freedom after graduating. A lot of my CS peers and friends would rather immediately jump to industry to make that magical $100k/yr, but I

That's interesting because I can't seem to find the exact CPU that these laptops ship with anywhere on the page. The ThinkWiki page shows that there are Core Duo (not 2!) and Core Solo variants of this laptop that exist as well.

This news isn't a huge surprise, but it still saddens me. It seems that I started getting into x86 hardware just as the CPU battle/Moore's law started dying. My first real build had an Athlon 64 X2, and back then I foolishly

Situations like these are how I justify keeping a low power 24/7 box on at home. In situations where I don't have my own (trusted) connection, I'll just ssh tunnel a SOCKS5 proxy to my home server. I only have a residential i
