Not saying she was wrong, but getting help for systemic issues has never ever helped much. There's very little you can do but ignore assholes, or learn how to tear them a new one (you need to become damaged first). Anything in between

Not in any multi-user multi-process OS. You set environment variables in a process (ie. shell/CMD.EXE) and spawn child process (the program) from that parent. The environment variables will only be visible to those two processes.

Give yourself 6 months and find several people who can show you expected work. Read code until you see how it can be done better. Most corporate code is pure garbage, so don't sell yourself short.
