Someone mentioned returning a closure from a function. That's something that is done all the time in higher-level languages and hard to do without a GC. Also, in general GC's are much faster than reference counting (especially whe

Yes. In South Korea you can't just put a SIM card in a device and use it like you can in the rest of the world. The phones have to be activated with the carrier. I don't know of any other place where this happens.

That sounds very suspicious. Do you have a source for this? Remember that you don't even need a carrier to be able to use the app store. Who takes the 25% from the payments done from my wlan-only tablet?

Mountain biking has plenty of downhill segments. In fact, there is an entire category of the sport conveniently named Downhill. Downhill racing can definitely be dangerous, but it is my belief that the people who do it are much more experie

Yes, I think it's arguable that MS won the console war. Could you tell me what you are measuring to reach that conclusion? Last I looked, the only category where the Xbox was ahead is US sales, and even there, they were only marginally

Eclipse has always been terrible, but IDEA on the other hand is the best development environment in existence, regardless of platform. Even Google finally realised that Eclipse is a dead horse and switched the official environment to IDEA.

But it is important to mention these things. It's needed as a counter weight to the message that was spread not long ago by people like Gruber, "there is no tablet market, only the ipad market"

The European Union web page is europa.eu.int. That's the biggest one I can think of. I do admit that one probably don't see that one a lot if you don't live in Europe.

What part of Android requires keys to install? Oh, you mean the _hardware_ is locked down? Guess what, I can't install Ubuntu on an Iphone either. I guess that makes Ubuntu non-open then?

What open source implementations are those? I spent some time recently learning APL, and the only one I could find was NARS2000 which is Windows-only, very buggy and has practically no documentation available. If you know of any others, ple

I think it has more to with mathematicians seeing programming as nothing more than an implementation detail. They spend their time designing an algorithm on paper, writing a paper on it and probably has a whole pile of versions sitting on h

That looks like typical code written by a mathematician. Look online for implementations of various mathematical algorithms and you'll get more code like this than you'll ever wanted to ever see.

He's still completely ignoring the fact that Apple in their infinite wisdom decided that you absolutely must use two hands to zoom (pinch). That sort of defeats any argument that they designed the phone for one-handed use.

We've been hearing about how great graphene is and how it will revolutionise everything under the sun for the better part of a decade now. My question is simply, when will we see an actual product using it? To my knowledge none exists, and

On a 64-bit architecture, this is completely pointless as there is no problem with the address space. Memory is also not a problem since all modern operating system allocates stack memory as needed. So, my question is why spend time on impl
