Sure, maybe the point about "PRODUCTION" may not have applied, I was mainly commenting on OPs post about how we've all been in a situation and the steps I take to avoid such situations. I'm curious about your arguments a

Would the steps I describe prevent actions taken in the GitLab incident? I would never make no assumptions to that. Maybe. Maybe not. Did I say following those steps would make it unlikely to happen to you? No. That's why I prefaced it

I'm no sysadmin, and I know mistakes are inevitable and all... but I find this kind of mistake is unlikely to come from me. I feel as though a lot of developers are too nonchalant about production boxes. I think one or two close calls

Maxed out everything in my city (Cleveland) before I was able to reach a salary I'd consider, and I'm hardly a Senior engineer. I wouldn't call their salary range a spit in the face, but its probably around $20k below market

A year or two ago that was the case. Then io.js forked, implemented a bunch of features and later was brought back into the NodeJS fold. Since then, Node has been a lot more proactive about keeping up with newer specs.

I treat the comments in my code as notes... things future developers will need to know, TODO's, occasionally why I'm doing things a certain way, or other things that may be forgotten. I try to make the code as readable as possible

It's helpful to separate performance from the ability to perform. It's generally not the greatest idea to prematurely optimize, but you should absolutely be making decisions that give you the flexibility to optimize in the future.
