As skydivers, we don't count. That's just the stuff from movies. We have altimeters that we trust to tell us our height. But more than those, we trust our best altimeter - our eyes. Visor fogging prevents you from knowing how high you are -

^^ This. Your eyes are your best altimeter, and flying blind isn't ever a good idea...but particularly on a high-stress operation like this one.

Are we talking about the speed record? It depends on a number of variables, most notably being body position and altitude. The higher the altitude, the thinner the air. Whereas terminal velocity at 10,000' MSL (mean sea level) is 120mph, if

Now that's a freakin' cool article! Freefall is generally defined in terms of vertical speed. If you exit a DeHavilland Twin Otter that's doing 90 knots forward speed, yes, you get "forward throw" from the plane...but you still have to acce

IMO (skydiving instructor, world record holder with ~800 jumps), it doesn't necessarily contradict the definition of freefall...and was in keeping with Kittinger's mission (which was to test whether a Mercury astronaut with no skydiving exp

As others have mentioned, Kittinger isn't "jealous" - in fact, he doesn't look at what he did as setting a "record," per se. Kittinger's jumps were done as part of Project Manhigh and Project Excelsior, two U.S. military projects launched i

Agreed. And like Coke and Kleenex, through sheer brand awareness, they've achieved that rare feat in which a company's brand becomes synonymous with an object. In conversation throughout the world, Soft Drink = "Coke" Tissue = "Kleenex" Ene

Agreed. The best use of a 'free' pricing tier is for an extremely-limited version of your product - one that someone can't use on a regular basis and get what they need out of it. You have to stack your features in tiers that encourage us

It's an interesting question...but as someone who used to word in the survey world, I've gotta say it: the questions here are not going to give very useful data. Here's a couple of examples (& a tl;dr): 1) "Have you been to the US recen

I'm not so sure about this one. Doctors generally need the BG records to be appended to the patient's ongoing records, so they can spot both macro- and micro-trends. I doubt many endocrinologists would decide to forego capturing the data be

Zee, Judith Griggs with Cooks Source was 'brutally honest' as well. You would probably do well to give her story a read: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/11/web-decries-infring... It obviously has some keen similarities to your situa

Just to clarify - Amazon has DROPPED its affiliates in most of those states. In CO in particular (a state I know more about than any of the others), they sent a letter to all affiliates immediately terminating their association with Amazon

Wow. While I respect a company that demands the best people and wants to find people who fit with its culture, I think that's a bit much. At a certain point, one begins to wonder how much a company like that values its employees, if they're

As the next guy mentioned, I'm also not sure about BND - or bonds in particular - as a good safety net right now. With the U.S. as heavilty-leveraged as it is now, if the past is any indicator, we're headed for inflation. For the same reaso

Hey, Ben - I'm no developer (actually an interactive copywriter), but I know enough about Ruby to hold a decent conversation. I agree with timmah - you adequately convey what Devver does, but you're not really giving enough of a value pro
