I don’t see it so strict. You can put vertical and lateral thinkers together in a team and get the best of both worlds, i.e. solve the puzzles that matter and provide a sane system that actually works.

Maybe it makes more sense to look at concrete examples. Twitter using the db as router (and rails in general), was a reasonable decision for the MVP. They got it fast and cheap. For social media kind of traffic it became inadequate at some

Topology is often used to prove existence or non-existence. If you base that on a shaky conjectures you’re not any wiser. If you apply it to algorithms that means the difference may be that the algorithm encrypts your data safely every time
