I think its important to give away things that are not your core business. I like the pandora hat and I remember it fondly, but if my coworker got a super-awesome pandora account, I think I would just feel "dang, why didn't I get one".

I got a hat. I treasure that hat like it were my first born. Its amazing how much more highly I think of them for basically just throwing out hats.

As someone who owns a tablet PC I disagree. I have two convertible tablets, one pen only and one with touch and pen. I almost never use the pen unless I am in note taking mode or doodling in OneNote. There is a certain level of conscious ef

There is a Google-specific guide. Its mostly of the form "go read the Sun style guide", with some specific clarifications of things the Sun style guide is quiet on.

Unless I'm crazy, we still do. These guides differ from the internal guides in various strange ways. I'm pretty sure these are the coding standards for code released outside of Google. For various disgusting historical reasons Python writte

(If the doctor that keeps you healthier makes you more money, will that not drive doctors to less risky specializations? I'd imagine that a brain surgeon for example sees many more people who are likely to die than say a dermatologist.)

You can make CSS sprites automatically. I'm not sure thats the best idea in the world, but its certainly doable.

As someone who owns a hard drive iRiver from when the original ipod was available (with clicky-wheel and all)... I'm not so sure about your statement.

Well. I run emacs for my text editor (and everything else). The stuff I do in the CLI is usually sort of basic shell scripting and pushing code. I use the Windows' offline files feature to access my features over a samba share as well. (Tha

I think the Rails super-over-loaded Do-What-I-Mean method would become more popular. Last night I tried to futz around with some of the form helpers, and almost every parameter is optional. It makes for some pretty challenging parameter mun

I use GnuWin32 to get most of my Linux CL needs. Past that, well, I usually SSH into a beastly Linux machine and Windows is just a glorified "thing that runs putty" (well and runs my music player and plays flash without sucking.)

I think you're ignoring the fact that utility is non-linear with money. If you're kind of poor (not starving though), it makes sense to play the lottery. $10 a month isn't going to cause you to starve, but there is a possibility you'll get

I could imagine that this could mask bugs actually. Recently a project I work on started deadlocking. This meant randomly a single request thread would spin endlessly. Now imagine we had a magic "start more servers" mode. We push new builds

Geography plays a strong role as well. In the US AIM is super popular (until it was supplanted by gchat in my clique). European friends used to use ICQ (long ago), and I think MSN has been generally popular in Asia forever.

I think that wishing death/suicide kind of crosses the line for me. I agree that I think the college loan industry is a bit ridiculous, but something about this comment just went a bit further than I'm comfortable with.

While this is true, look at the difficulty people had in reconstructing his work from github. People may have clones of the repo, but maybe not with all of his latest commits.

I believe in practice register renaming ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Register_renaming ) largely negates the difference in performance. Notice the mention of some CPUs having MORE registers than are nameable in the instruction set. I am n

Why do you want to switch to git? I say this as someone who uses perforce, subversion, git and mercurial on a regular basis. Version control is largely similar for the 90% of your work life, and that 10% can usually be solved by hand.

"who I call" is a massive subset of my social graph. Most of the things I do are arranged by email/IM. We agree to go to someone's house at a particular time, and then we do so. I'd only call if I managed to get lost.
