For the record, that's not a CLISP bug. It's a design decision mentioned in its manual. The Common Lisp standard allows to have a negative float zero, but it does not require it.

The idea of a symbol is that one does only do a lookup when the symbol is read. During execution the symbol is not read again. After reading the symbol is a reference to a symbol object in memory. That's why early Lisp has symbols for

Many implementations also give us type inferencing and optimizations, but usually not compile time type checking like in SBCL. I would also kind of think that the level of type inferencing in SBCL is greater.

by lispm 6y ago
Many Lisp compilers do that. What makes SBCL special is a) using type information as compile-time assertions and b) the level of diagnostic output during compilation. The compiler explains in detail when operations can't be optimized f

Lisp always uses prefix operator symbols. something like { ... } would be (progn ...) . Thus when one reads Lisp, one doesn't look that much for character syntax, but for operator names and list structure layout. Parentheses are there,

If one uses a Lisp interpreter, macro expansion may happen at runtime. CLISP example: [2]> (defmacro add2 (place) (print 'add2) `(incf ,place 2)) ADD2 [3]> (let ((a 1)) (dotimes (i 4) (add2 a))) ADD2 ADD2 ADD2
