If your tysk is still fresh, try Keller&Paul[1]. It was the text for my second-semester hardware course, in which we "built" a real processor from 74somethings. "built" because we didn't really touch hardware, we just looked at schemati

The author says (and I agree) that the process of judging cannot be easily performed completely by a computer, and goes on arguing for better retrieval systems for legal texts -- so Gödel would probably just shrug. Actually, I think laws (a

However, the relation between how much is there to know (increasing) and how much fits in a head (constant) is growing, which is sad, and whether it has ever been 1 seems rather unimportant to me.

I believe the complexity comes inevitably with code reuse and abstraction. Once you've got your ethernet driver working, you discover that your routable point-to-point packet exchange is useful in many places, so you extract an IP component

The difference between Intel/MASM syntax and AT&T/GNU syntax is rather superficial[1], so with a little squinting you can use a MASM book with the GNU assembler. Newer versions of the GNU assembler also come with a directive .intel_synt

When I'm within reach of my Emacs, I use org-remember to create an idea entry. Otherwise, I usually carry enough calendar sheets on whose backsides I can keep ideas fresh until I can enter them into a computer.

In a small company I worked for, we decided to put most of the internal writing into our MediaWiki. Project plans, memos, design whitepapers, meeting minutes, vacation plan, internal encyclopedia, FAQs for locally installed tools etc. Earli

Steve Yegge wrote about it back in April[1]. He compared legalization of cannabis to software requirements which look easy until you really try to work out the details. [1] http://steve-yegge.blogspot.com/2009/04/have-you-ever-legali...

You could use XUL for the GUI. The German car rental company Sixt did that in 2005 for their corporate apps. I don't know what became of it, though.

The Maude project [1] (and its documentation) may be of interest; they use term rewriting in a formal modeling and model-checking tool. There's an introductory course at [2]. 1. http://maude.cs.uiuc.edu/ 2. http://heim.ifi.uio.no/~peter

I don't think it will happen, though; the ratio of people who care about the elegance of their processor's assembly language to people who buy computers is just too low. Not in form of a clean cut, at least: x86-64 brought us eight addition

No, but game theory is. Splitting the bill without tediously adding up everybody's items and without everybody paying for the single gourmet's dessert is a mechanism design problem.
