In Germany, mail-order companies are required by law to offer 14 days money-back service. There are exceptions for among others, perishable goods and custom-made goods. The mandatory six-month warranty for defects, however, is independent f

I picked up programming at 10 from watching my father (machine engineer with no CS background whatsoever) write dBaseIII+ programs. So I guess any language will do, as long as it doesn't require advanced maths.

I liked the somewhat elegant heuristic for general infix-to-prefix conversion: <quote> {...} contains an "infix list". If the enclosed infix list has (1) an odd number of parameters, (2) at least 3 parameters, and (3) all even param

To me, not familiar with ObjC/OSX memory management, the last sentence reads like "...it's not a big deal after all. If you malloc/fopen something, make sure you free/fclose it." Could you explain the difference?

When Glyph Lefkowitz (of the Twisted project) was hired, he posted unboxing pics of his job offer to his blog (which has since been closed down). He praised the usability of the letter. Second-hand mention in: http://www.geek.com/articles/

There's eFaktura in Norway[1]. Merchants send their bills to you electronically, and you pay them through your homebanking interface. As I never used it when I lived there, I don't know if the mechanism is fast enough for immediate purchase

I think the author underestimates consumer-grade video-cutting software. He may have lost a weekend of work due to an iMovie UI bug, but not everyone has.

My bank gave me a PIN and a list of transaction numbers (seems to be standard practice in Germany). So I could theoretically let a Mint-like service read my bank statements without allowing them to transfer anything.

Apparently, Slashdot reader TheRaven64 has read the story. He summarizes it: http://hardware.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1865066&cid... (tldr: it's about DR0 working on more than one word)

Many netbook screens come in 1024x600, so I wouldn't plan for everyone to have 1280 columns just yet. TFA talks about mobile versions degrading gracefully, but not about desktop browsers on small screens.

"Ditch X server" sounds like they're going to completely abandon X11. However, the Wayland FAQ[1] outlines ways of integrating X11 with Wayland, so I suppose users of, say, ddd are not going to suffer much. 1. https://groups.google.com/gro

Is Atomiq more about copy-paste from foreign code or more about copy-paste instead of refactoring to more general code? If the former, have you thought about a turnitin-like service for CS departments?

Nitriq doesn't sound like it fits the service-based model -- you'd have to upload your source code or your binary assemblies everytime you want to analyze something. To me, that would be like a service-based compiler or a service-based debu

HTTPS also needs distinct IP addresses for distinct hostnames, so that the HTTP handshake, in which the Host: header appears, is already protected by an encrypted channel. No more having multiple websites on one IP address.
