Look at how much crap they got and get over the Ribbon, something which almost all of the people who use it regularly love. Changing things that people are invested in is hard. They don't like change, and don't like it when you force it upo

Every release of windows ever has doubled the system requirements. Except this one. So it should (depending on OEM crapware, etc) be a bit snappier.

I've used both. They just don't feel quite the same for aimless web browsing. Maybe it's because with a trackpoint my fingers don't leave home row, but I find that it isn't that much better (especially on some link-heavy sites)

If you get a good zshrc, it Just Works, without much additional effort. Admittedly, I mostly use those parts of zsh which are similar to most other shells, but which it does better (argument completions, some directory stack, etc).

Better than win+r for run is just hitting windows which brings up the start menu. With the new start menu, this is similar to Quicksilver and Katapult and all those other things. If you use zsh (and you really should. It is better than bash

It does. .msi installers act as atomic packages like other systems. Windows doesn't have a centralized system, nor does it enforce the use of msis. But they exist and provide a very nice way of managing resources. The issue with a central

Depends what you mean by 'standards'. 7 & 8 support more of CSS 2.1 than the other browsers. I believe support for CSS3 is lacking because they didn't want to write to a draft, and then have to support no-longer-standard extensions when

Why do you need the all-directional layout? It seems that you could just do the Bing thing, which has the infinite scrolling without the flash.

I prefer wombat. It's a gvim only scheme (unless you know a guy who interpolated it for 256 color), but it is veeeery nice.

Vista doesn't have nearly the security problems of the XP and before systems. Things like not running as root and integrity levels changed the security landscape. In addition, I believe that in between XP and Vista they rewrote much of the

I belive that was the original reasoning, and thus led to the Java generics behaving a little weirdly. Then other decisions forced them to change the bytecode anyway , but they never fixed generics.

Sort of, for well-defined functions (for some definition of well-defined). I remember seeing an example in analysis which showed that it was possible to get some nonintuitive behavior in functions.

I remember seeing a video that talked about the physics of boxing, specifically rolling with the punches. It clearly works, people who roll are hit much less hard. However, a champion boxer hits at ~90MPH. You can't jerk yourself back fast

I agree. It seems that the result of this is that Microsoft cannot make a better product (by adding value) rather than helping consumers.

Arch is related to Gentoo in that both offer rolling updates and try to keep you on the bleeding edge. They differ in that Gentoo is a primarily source-based system with binary packages bolted on and Arch is a primarily binary-based system

And the Debian people make sure that the backporting goes smoothly. I used to run arch. Forget to update for a few weeks, and you could almost guarantee a broken system when you tried. It was even worse with Gentoo.

Preferring OSX to XP is somewhat of a no-brainer at this point, as XP is about 10 years old. A fairer comparison might be the Win7 RC (perhaps, I don't know about breadth of driver support).

Why not just buy the standalone OS? You are not forced to buy the upgrade, and if you are reinstalling that much, it'd probably be worth it.

I used to use K&R, but then I discovered a useful fact that in Allman, you can comment out blocks very easily. This lets you play around with control flow in a simpler way than is possible in K&R et al.

However, hydrogen will not pool like gasoline. If it doesn't ignite, it will just fly off into space. This mitigates some of the risk (i.e. if there is an accident, a fuel leak will either kill you quickly, or it won't)

IIRC, Microsoft fixed a lot of the security issues with Vista/7. Modern Windows is a very different creature from old Windows, and even has features that many other OS's are missing (privledge levels).

I rarely if ever talk through FB chat, even after setting up the facebook plugin. It's much less reliable than GTalk (even AIM beats it out), so I try to default to other means.

Because wolfram alpha was a launch. Bing was a re-branding. So Bing gets all the traffic that MS already had, while trying to carve out a little more of the rest of the pie. Thus, you should expect to see different launch patterns.
