On the other hand, a lot of the stuff at Google is Java. Also, I can't imagine writing a reliable 1m lines of code system (say for a bank) in Lisp (or any other dynamic language for that matter).

Yes. I refuse to work with codebases in dynamic typed languages - they're just too hard to read and get familiar with.

Are you a non-native? The culture of overcharging foreigners is probably still pretty strong in many places (it was born during the communist time, where every westerner was perceived as a walking wallet).

The information density (text/meaningful graphics per square inch) is very low - most of the space is unused, the text is large etc. I assumed that, on smaller screens, the page would be laid out so that there's less wasted space.

I personally hate such design - what's the point of having a 24" monitor when the web page looks like it's optimized for mobile/tablet anyway?

The ubiquitousness of the assumption that software startup == web startup saddens me.

Gombrowicz's diaries are a classic of contemporary literature and testament to the man's genius (and temperament!). Strongly recommended to anyone who wants an ambitious, but rewarding read.

I thought that novadays even the AV companies admit (off the record) that they've lost the battle, and cannot really do a good job detecting the more sophisticated viruses?

As for the scaling up part, you could hire a student (or even a responsible high school kid) to do the buying part for you. A friend of mine was a full time magic trader, and he hired a kid to sift through mountains of commons that he bough

My guess is that people who are making all those commits are often pretty much indifferent about their jobs (as software engineers) as well. In general, just because you're passionate about something doesn't mean you'll part

It's entirely possible to get a job under the general label of "programming" - businesses everywhere need custom systems written to handle their shit and it doesn't really require any extra skills beyond being able to pr

1. Oil production goes under mining. 2. Oil is a globally traded commodity, the fact that some of it is produced in the US doesn't affect the local (=in the US) price.

It seems unlikely, given that mining & agriculture (industries affected by availability of natural resources) comprise only 3% of the US economy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_the_United_States

Why do you actually care about "what you are achieving"? It seems like programming is your passion, which is an incredible luck in itself (most people don't have a passion, and many wish they had) - you should cherish it imo.
