Have you ever tested various PWM frequencies? 50/60Hz is very noticable - but if the PWM is switching at 1000Hz? 5kHz? There is presumably a rate at which it is imperceptible to you? Apparently Philips Hue uses 500-1000Hz. I wonder if

Larger animals tend to more intelligent - presumably there’s a natural limit to the size of prey a carnivorous plant can reliably catch from a static location.

Unfortunately the moment the environment and energy are involved, journalism falls apart. "Water consumption" is a meaningless metric if it 's not accompanied by other information - location, energy intensity of water, source

I briefly got excited about the possibility of local LLMs as an offline knowledge base. Then I tried asking Gemma for a list of the tallest buildings in the world and it just made up a bunch. It even provided detailed information about the

Judging by their website, it does take off vertically, but just didn’t in this flight. Which makes sense if this was the first flight away from the airport. They need to do things in small steps and validate each one.

I imagine standards have also shifted. It just wouldn’t have been possible to wash a child’s clothes after one wear before the invention of the washing machine. People also had far less clothing that they could have even needed to wash.

Biological muscles are proof that you can make incredibly small and forceful actuators. But the state of robotics is nowhere near them, because the fundamental construction of every robotic actuator is completely different. We’ve been build

A longer cable won't just catch fire, because the power dissipation per unit of length is the same regardless of overall length. Imagine the most extreme case - a cable so long the voltage difference is 0V at the end. It's basical

I've had plenty of colleagues who expect the job to be that. Just working on a small ticket and moving it to "to test" when done. It's incredibly frustrating to try and get anything done in a team like that. The reality

I worked in RF (radar) for a while and the dB/dBm is an incredibly useful tool there. It makes reasoning about amplifier chains and insertion loss so much more straightforward. It also means you can talk about transmitters and receiver

The limiting factor in most structural uses of wood is stiffness not strength. You could build your floor joists out of scaffolding boards, but they'd bend unacceptably. Stiffness is basically a product of geometry rather than strength

We're talking about a carbon tax. By definition it is not on car fuel, but on carbon. You don't need state surveillance or tracking purchases. You just need to get to the source of the problem. Hydrocarbons leaving the ground. At

Rich people use more energy. That’s been shown by loads of studies. Maybe they drive a more efficient car, but they own much larger houses which are heated or cooled consistently, they travel a lot more, and they buy things with embodied ca

I think social media is reducing local accents in a way mass travel or media never seemed to - probably because it exposes people to “cool” accents in a way that old media never did.

Everyone in the uk has a central hot water heater, and nobody has a hot-water plumbed dishwasher. Presumably the 230V supply is enough to heat the water up quickly. Do you also have hot water plumbed washing machines?
