I read the whole thread up till now and did not see anyone supporting mandated DEI statements. So I’m posting to say that I do support them. In my experience at a couple of different learning institutions I’ve seen what I believe are positi

It’s funny you should say that. RRR was the first Indian movie I’ve watched that felt like anime to me. I think it’s actually a very enlightening comparison.

I appreciate your comment and insight. But I’m an American Gen-Xer and I enjoyed Zindagi Na Milega Dobara very much. So it can appeal to other people too. For other folks reading I always recommend Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) as the

I get kernel panics with my CalDigit dock too! Only since the most recent OS update though. Your post is inspiring me to unplug one monitor when I’m not using it and see if it helps. Thanks for the unintended suggestion!

Same with my Zojirushi rice cooker, as well as my Zojirushi water heater and thermos. Their stuff has lasted a long time and performed great for me.

Seconded. Don’t forget updating with ads and spyware. I’ve resolved never to update the software on my TVs going forward unless there’s a major bug.

I’ve used a similar interview technique at a previous job and it was great. The candidates and I both generally liked it a lot.

I’ve been professionally coding for two decades and I have exactly zero public code I can show. I know plenty of similar people. You cannot assume people have code to show you.

Pickles of course (too bad the codebase isn’t in Python or it could be a great pun in this circumstance).

Concatenating lots of Strings instead of using a StringBuffer will do the trick. Sure, people who are familiar with Java know not to do that. But I’ve seen plenty of production code that concatenates.

I don’t agree that the data support your claim. This link seems like a good summary: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-10-27/fact-check-gina-rineh...

I live in downtown Seattle. I go to the ID all the time and have never once felt unsafe. Pike Place Market and the Space Needle are the same way and honestly that’s where the tourists usually want to go despite me telling them to go to the

I never thought about all these other motivations. Thanks for responding with them! And it sounds like there may be at some physicists like I was describing that get burnt out or discouraged too.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I can see the perspective (at least currently) of “the interpretations don’t add any meaningful information” being the reason not to be interested.

I think the thing that honestly puzzles me is: before physicists learned physics, did their entire desire to be in the field spring from “shut up and calculate”? Or was there a time in their lives (especially when they were young) where the

I appreciate this reply. I often see nerds on the internet decry things without understanding the needs or motivations of people not like them, especially on topics that really bother nerds. Thanks for pushing hard to do that personally. It

I know this is painful to say and to hear, but below 4 percent is not reasonably popular anymore. It doesn’t mean Firefox isn’t a good browser or that you shouldn’t use it. But we shouldn’t pretend it is even semi-popular anymore. (Except a

Somewhat related — in my experience reading news articles online, it seems like more and more often I’m seeing the period migrate outside parentheses for full sentences. Has anyone else noticed this trend?
