I think I used to work at the company you’re talking about. Definitely don’t miss those parts! What a crazy old tech stack it was…

I think this could be useful. Or maybe something like suppress the first half hour of comments and then show them all at once but in reverse chronological order.

I agree about the vocal people being the ones that influence the conversation. I hope there can be some way to fix this problem. I’ve been reading Hacker News avidly since close to when it started, and I comment occasionally when I feel lik

Technically you are correct and I used to complain about this myself for years. But it seems like at least for consumers they’re often content to have authentication equal authorization so I feel like mostly this battle has been lost in the

Agreed. I’ve been there almost 20 years now and still read the forums every day. It was weird to read this article and not even see SA called out as the original source. I think maybe a lot of old humor during SA’s heyday was like that.

I've used it some back when it was first introduced. Some people were just not ever able to sync with the stream sometimes, and also it was a bummer asking everyone to sign up for Spotify Premium to be able to listen. I don't know

It's not only this reason. Even N95 masks are rated only to .3 micron. COVID-19 is .1 micron. It will prevent droplets from those already infected but I don't see how it would help in the healthy much. Maybe it slows down the air

I agree. I'm guessing that, at least for many folks, they didn't know the context, and assumed that the more positive statements are the result of naivete or ignorance.

I understand your point, but I read articles like this (and especially ones by Langewiesche) because there are topics that, for me, I learn better about it this way. I'm exactly opposite of you -- I generally can't bear to watch v

I used to be able to roughly group American pop music trends by decade. It was never perfect (the '60s and '70s weren't THAT different from each other, compared to all the other decades) but it was useful. In the 2000s and 20

Sounds like you're still significantly involved with the docs, then. Are you currently working on transitioning away those responsibilities?

But doesn't malware like to hide in there in Windows? I've had it turned off for years on my Windows machines for that reason.

I have gotten the same when posting to many technical communities. Sometimes it's a good thing (I've actually agreed in some cases) and sometimes it's awful. I agree that it's infuriating when it's something reasona

I like it too (2019 version). I hated it the first three weeks, but now it's great and I prefer it to my old 2012 MacBook Pro keyboard. Maybe I'll hate it again in six months or a year if it dies like many other people's have

Maybe this sounds a bit silly, but this is honestly one of the most mind-blowing thoughts I've read on Hacker News. Thanks, I can't believe I never thought of this myself in the past. :)

Same for me (reading The Economist). Having a few days or a week to filter news down means I still hear about things in a semi-timely manner but that I don't seem to get caught up in most media's daily churn.

I've been using Netflix DVD since it started and I'm still using it happily, mainly for the selection. I think there are a lot of movie buffs like me that use it just for that reason.

It lessens the amount of car storage needed too, though, which is also important. It would be nice if multi-person trips like UberPool would be exempted to encourage their use, but I don't know if that's technically feasible.

This really sums up my opinion too. I feel like, even for many folks that end up liking the keyboards, it takes a couple of weeks to learn not to push so hard on the keys. That's certainly what it was like for me. But I like it now.

But if you always apportion work according to strengths, how can anybody ever fix their weaknesses? There have to be other criteria too, right?

And I wonder how much the Lon search results are inflated by this same phenomenon? It may be a lot worse than 20-30 times.

Yeah. It's just another tool. Emotion works quickly over large and/or vague sources of information using heuristics. Sometimes this is useful, and sometimes it isn't.

I used to work at two different programming jobs where people commonly said you weren't really useful until you'd been there multiple years. In both cases I agreed.
