I too think that OEMs and carriers delaying updates will be the biggest threat to Android. It has certainly angered me to the point where I don't recommend HTC anymore and will buy an iPhone next time around.

Not really related, but isn't it a little bit sad that out of the 19 D8 speakers that are being emphasised on the right hand side panel only one is female?

To me the key point of this post was:"And in the long term, as the mobile industry gets more accustomed to the idea of upgradeable phone software, more and more devices will be be upgraded." Google is doing a fantastic job with Android, it'

I think the centralisation of computer power in huge data centres has great opportunities to cut ineffiencient and wasteful power consumption, therefore I applaud this. Sadly, it looks like we will consume a lot of energy in the data centre

I for one am glad that Microsoft is marketing their browser a little more and I liked the little presentation. I hate IE as much as the next guy but IE8 is much better than IE6 and if it takes Microsoft to say that having a modern browser i

"Both Apple and Google are probably going to be fine" doesn't make for a good headline though, does it?

On a related note, can I as a consumer do anything to help IPv6 along?

Interesting, but seems hardly surprising - also not restricted to San Francisco. Where I live (Europe) the trendier and younger companies are in warehouse-style offices in the inner city and the more established ones have moved into bigger,

I really don't wanna be that developer or DBA whose lack of attention caused this. I work for an online retailer and obviously we live in fear of self-inflicted downtime. (That said, no business likes downtime)

You're saying what I'm thinking. I have a (European) HTC Hero and HTC combined with T-Mobile make the crappiest, most sluggish update experience possible. I am very disappointed with them - so much that will probably buy an iPhone next time

This is great but will only be useful if Facebook, and to a lesser extend, Microsoft get behind it. Google seems to be sold since it is basically a souped-up OAuth and Brad Fitzpatrick now works there.

If interoperability is important why did Microsoft not get behind OpenDocument? I know this sounds a little passive-aggressive but I'm genuinely interested to know if there was a reason other than NIH.

To be honest, I quite like the lo-fi nature of the "Who's hiring" process on HN. If you really are looking for a job I think spending 15 minutes (if that) on a (admittedly poorly organised) thread isn't too much hassle in my opinion.

I guess the answer to this question is: Because they can. TV watchers would be furious if they had to buy a set top box to decrypt something that used to be unencrypted.

I read it as "HTML's <video> doesn't have DRM". However, his concern about streaming and buffering capabilities seem valid. I'm assuming this will be improved as time moves on.

You hit the nail on the head. I bought the HTC Hero 6 months ago and it is really, really laggy at times. I wish I'd bought an iPhone. To insult to insury, HTC has been delaying updating it to 2.1 for months now, all whilst claiming that th
