The plugin engine API is C++. They export a C client API, along with many other client APIs. EDIT: I just reread the above, and should mention that I didn't mean it to be snarky at all. Sorry.

This is sort of a technical solution, but as long as I'm working on something that doesn't need a browser for reference (so, C programming, where I can look up manpages), I just kill X and do my work on ttys. It helps you focus on only one

I won't speak for Slava, but I think generally the idea is that knowing either one well enough implies a certain amount of knowledge about computer guts, which in turn implies that it shouldn't be too hard for you to learn the other. Tech

Someone forgot "Perfect doppleganger technology, then go back in time to kill Stroustrup, replace him, and write C++ in a way that you actually can learn it in 21 days. Also, obsolete Sun Microsystems."

I had the same issue learning the standard library. It's huge, redundant (I think...), and has completely unsearchable names and no organization or hierarchy. I seem to remember sbcl having some way to compile real executables though, some

So these are the means in the L^r norms, with r in the reals rather than the integers?

I really like patio11's comment, so I won't repeat any of that. I have two reasons for you to be cool and stay in school: 1. If you want to be successful in the Hacker News sense of the word, which seems to mean hacking on something interes

Since you seem to have at least something of a handle on the LISPs of the world, go master C. Embed in your brain everything about pointers (and multiple indirect pointers), structures, offsets, row-major ordered higher-dimensional arrays,

msysgit works well on windows these days, and there are enough mac kids on github that mac support must be fine too. As far as I know, git is a bit more flexible than mercurial, in the sense that each user can use it the way they like to (w

So yes, some of these gems don't need man-pages. I wasn't hoping for 100% man-page coverage (maybe an interesting tool to write, now that I think of it...), but better than one apart from the gem-man quasi-meta-manpage would be a start. In

I think the point is "hey people let's stop releasing software without decent user documentation because that's lazy and lame". And I agree wholeheartedly. EDIT: For example: % gem list | wc -l 89 % gem man --all | tail -n +3 | awk

I wish I could upvote this more. There is no way compilation is I/O bound. Even over the network this is true. My old lab had homedirs all on NFS (gigabit I think, but that's not too important) and all our builds were CPU-bound, even wi

There's a simple setting you can change in gconf to fix this (at least there used to be): /apps/metacity/general/button_layout. You should set it to "menu:minimize, maximize, close" to get the old functionality back.

I'm interested in this function as well. I'd like to try to analyze his script to see if there is such a bound, or at least some theoretical results to be pulled out of it, but I didn't see the guy's script on the page; has anyone found it

There's a radiolab show (called "Numbers") where they talk about this. Quite cool, though they don't go in to the reason behind it, which is a little unsatisfying.

I don't know about anyone else, but when the homepage screams "portable" and I still need to add header includes to get it to compile (and the tests fail even then), I get worried.

I know zsh has extremely good manpages, even for things like control structures (try zshmisc(1)), and it describes a lot of the differences between itself and bash or restricted sh syntax.
