I've been reading this blog (really, letting it pile up in google reader) for some time now, and though I can't point you to a specific post, I'm pretty sure I remember the author being a he.

My first interpretation of this data is that professors are trying to encourage young women to get interested in their field, and therefore subconsciously giving them more resources, but that is probably because there are so few women in th

That might be true, though I don't know whether that depends on the entropy in the file. It is likely the case that one of them compresses text better but takes a larger performance hit with binary data or somesuch. Turns out the paper I w

LZMA is well-known for its decompression speed. This is one of the reasons it's a popular choice for filesystem compression. It's quite easy for LZMA to keep a pretty fair pace with a disk, so you get a pretty noticeable performance boost

The icon you've got there (tiny newspaper on what looks like a mac monitor) is completely unclear to me. What are you trying to say with it? I don't know if this is true for anyone else, but for me the header nav stuff is HUUUUUUGE and cou

Loops as in "edges from vertex a to vertex a", not cycles, were discounted. That's fine because you can ignore them until the end, and then just check your vertices for any loops, in O(n) time.

Context: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graph_isomorphism#Algorithmic_a... tl;dr: Graph isomorphism recognition is an old and well-known problem that is in NP. It was not known whether it was NP-complete or in P, but this paper suggests th

I'll have to say this is probably cultural, and like most such things, is nowhere near globally true. I can tell you though, from personal experience, most of my friendships with other guys, and their friendships with other guys, follow thi

They aren't useless, they're just unclear. They map pretty well to actual issues, and after a while you'll get used to translating them.

I believe http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~gmh/cat.html was on HN sometime in the last two weeks. It's a very very good introduction to the underlying mathematical structures Haskell uses for its type system.

For hard (math) problems, which is where I find it hardest to make incremental progress, I usually just walk away, make myself some tea, or look for another problem. Anything that stops me from consciously thinking about it allows my subco

I absolutely agree, but the haskell guys have not quite gotten it complete. I envision mathematicians a-plenty installing ubuntu because it's "programmy" and then giving up installing the haskell platform because they don't know what compi

I'll jump on the "ignore tip #4" wagon (as long as you mention that it's naïve, and immediately move on), but I've got beef with some of the rest too: 2: More important than understanding what the problem is asking, is understanding why i

This is probably the best explanation of Red-Black trees, even outside of a functional setting. There is an implementation that is pretty faithful to Okasaki's paper here: http://www.cs.kent.ac.uk/people/staff/smk/redblack/Untyped.h... .

I believe Directed Edge got rejected, kept going anyway, and got accepted a year later. They had already done a bunch of work and had customers in the pipeline, which let them make great use of the network once they were there.
