Character delay is an issue over a sufficiently long distance network cable, forget mobile connections. Good thing I have tramp, and it doesn't ship it's own crypto....

Ubuntu is not a good example of a UNIX environment. That said, really? It doesn't come with gcc anymore? I find this offensive.

Ubuntu is a pretty weak unix. How do you really go about this? Where did you get your compiler? Where did you get autotools? My point is that OSX doesn't contain the basic requirements for bootstrapping by default anymore.

I contend that those are not traditional unices either. This is a very personal definition, but I think a useful one for most that are interested in the distinction.

I don't. Then again, I write systems C, so I don't really need to keep up with technology much. If anything, I keep up by reading the emails intel sends me. This is very domain-specific.

Today, it comes without a compiler. Getting one, and finding out where it got installed, is non-trivial. I don't like that.

Whoever downvoted me, please say why. If I'm wrong, I'm very curious to know why (because I work on a macbook and I'd like my life to be easier).

Wrong. They are a stripped, gutted, non-traditional UNIX with a really nice windowing system on top.

Installing a large number of useful unix programs is difficult or impossible. This is getting worse (see the recent changes that came with Xcode 4.3). Fink/MacPorts/Homebrew are horrible kludges when compared to what can be done with a fu

Macs do not have the same power as a traditional unix. They are a lot nicer to work on once you get them set up properly though.

I use ido-mode for file browsing, and semantic for code browsing. etags will get you quite far, semantic-symref gets you the rest of the way (though you can use cscope instead, through xcscope.el). ECB can be helpful but I don't find I ne

Why do you think dropbox is unlikely to find an acquirer? Because they're too proud to get absorbed into Apple? I can easily see them being a massive acqui-hire, as they've solved the problems Apple, Google, and Microsoft (lexicographical

You could not be more wrong. I have probably worked more for my fonts than for anything else about my system, on any linux distro I've tried (on OSX, the rendering's fine but the actual font choices kind of blow...there I have other problem

What do you think gentoo was? When I used it (2005-7ish), I think it was a toy for brat haxxors. At the time, I was a brat haxxor, so it worked well.

I have seen arch break pretty spectacularly, but only on systems where i did some, to put it delicately, unadvisable things (put /tmp, /var/tmp on tmpfs, put /usr on unionfs over squashfs, etc). Where I have avoided breaking standard practi

I have had the best font experience on arch, out of gentoo, debian, Ubuntu, fedora, centos, and FreeBSD. It wasn't straight out of the box, but it was easier to make happen than on any of the others.

Even if it's not write-infrequent, you can still try these ideas in SQL if you use a write-optimized database like tokudb (the one I work on).
