WAL is journaling mode set on the connection. It’s not a db level setting.

Using a single write thread and multiple readers gives perfectly sound and high performance concurrency in SQLite. Of course the particulars of how one actually does that depend on the language in use.

It’s easy to imagine there are a lot of these type of time bombs out there, particularly in really old legacy systems (> 20 years for example). I was at one place where even building the application for deployment led to a one week outag

The most fun I had with applets was the java4k gamescompetition that for a few years required the entries to be applets. At the time I thought there was something really cool about deploying a game on a static html page that anyone could cl

Ocaml also has a long standing claim to being an oo plus functional language for the future that hasn’t seen a lot of uptake. It would have been heartening and reassuring for the author to explore more candidates than Scala.

I propose a third moral, don’t use scanf when a dfa would suffice!

Wouldn’t a robot with the adaptability and trainablility of a human be, in effect a human? I say this only partially in jest. At one time I drove an old jalopy that developed a broken throttle cable, being poor i contrived a fix by splicing

This x1000, I was/am a particularly dense student and the only way I learned was by working loads of problems repeatedly until the “tricks” became second nature. The worst are solutions manuals with hand wavey solutions.

Seems like there are two different things here; launching passengers and freight, and returning passengers in comfort and without neck injuries. One could easily envision a passenger only winged glider similar to the space shuttle to serve

Really interesting, odd move imo. As others have said, this is a highly diverse industry, with entrenched players and smaller players as well. I think it's interesting to consider 'why'? Clearly Bezos thinks he can make money

That's also why when companies start talking about "cost cutting" on the order of $millions, it almost always means layoffs. That's a big lever to push on earnings, for example.

No triggers, no constraints (excepting maybe PRIMARY KEY and NOT NULL) Could you not then simply use a nosql solution?

It's an odd phenomenon I've seen before. For some reason, execs think they need Java. I had one guy say that customers didn't want to hear cobol; so for him there was a marketing component. Otherwise, I think a lot of execs b

It's still a win if they can go from procedural COBOL to procedural idiomatic Java. Goto's and "fall through PERFORMS" make idiomatic java impossible.

The second one immediately lowers the TCO for obvious licensing reasons How true is that though? They'd still have software licensing, they still need an OS to run on Hercules after all.

This is the part that piqued my interest. I've seen cobol to java translated source, it looks like java used as an assembler for cobol. Certainly there's a spectrum of cobol-y-ness. One would be hard pressed to go from cobol to ev

Now, this thought — we’re killing off the only life we know anywhere in the universe — is impossible to hold. It’s literally quite impossible to process for, I’d say, 99% of people on the planet. You can try, but you’ll fail. What does tha

Thanks to the XENON1T dark matter detector lodged under the Gran Sasso mountains of Italy, scientists have recorded one of the rarest events to ever be detected: a special type of radioactive decay in xenon-124. It's an amazing feat,

I did this back in 2010 or so. I wanted to diversify out of the stock market so I put some money into 20% down on a single family home. My sister was a single mom at the time renting an apartment in a good school district for her daughter.
