Yep, Sunday had the highest number of pingbacks. It's actually reasonable. This is an opt-in mailing list and subscribers are generally interested in the project, so if they are hit with a relevant update on their free time, they will res

Try and add support for detecting piped input on the server side: bcp < filename because this would allow for things like cat filename | gzip | bcp with the receiving end doing bcp | gunzip > filename Keep it as

I wrote an extension that does just that - http://swapped.cc/iip HN thread from 6 months ago - http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4373959 (edit) I should also add that I pitched the idea to pg about a year ago, never heard anything bac

Does WebRTC have any sort of extension mechanism whereby I can drop in my own version of NAT traversal logic? Speaking from past experience, STUN and ICE are OK, but they got the whole process fundamentally wrong. They let the clients drive

I ran into this in the domain of networking. Trying to deduce one-way path latency from the round-trip time ("ping") is impossible without further assumptions. You basically cannot understand if you are on a wire connection or if your uplin

WOFF is a result of font foundries and online font services pressuring W3C to produce a browser-only font format. Something that cannot be save-as'd and dragged into the C:\Windows\Fonts. It is indeed somewhat optimized for the web use, but

I just went through a process of @font-facing a website for one of my projects and I have several things to add: 1. Don't bother with direct font editing. Instead use a vector editor like Inkscape [1] to save your icons as SVG and then conv

No, that's not the same. Having a 5.x.x.x address assigned to your machine doesn't make all Internet traffic for that address go to your box. You either don't understand the concept of routing domains or you just feel like trashing Hamachi

I'm not involved with Hamachi anymore, so I took what they told me privately about IPv6 at face value. I know the work on it started back in '09 and there were some v6-related bugfixes referenced in the release notes. WRT 100.64.x.x. - back

The idea with protocol was always to keep the handshake/authentication part open, but don't commit to the details of the application client-server messaging. To that end the protocol spec for the original version was available from the mome

It wasn't a "gaming thing". It was indeed widely used in gaming circles, but gamers weren't really the target market I designed it for. They just happened to come along in droves, because I added support for network broadcasts and that made

They switch to IPv6 a while ago. That's one. Two - the idea to use 5.x/8 came through me and it dates back to a dot-bubble era managed VPN company I worked for, called eTunnels. These addresses are used for routing inside of virtual network

This is a part of a custom malloc(). The test involves running p = malloc(); free(p); in a tight loop for 5 seconds, generating about 60,000,000 traversals of the code in question. The slower version yields a loop count of around 67,

No, no changes before or after or anywhere else. Just that one line. I have written my share of hand-optimized assembly, but this is just an optimizer peculiarity. I am not after trying to understand why it happened, and I was making a joke

Writing a Brainfuck interpreter is a superb optimization exercise. Basic version is trivial to write, and in 2-3 iterations it's possible to get speed ups of 100x or more. If you haven't tried it, I would highly recommended it as a brain st
