Brew has the —head flag where one can instruct to build the latest commit from the repo. But the spec/Formular needs to set a head to pull from.

Awesome post! I worked with a bunch of package managers over the years and one can see that this design got inspired by the hood parts of a few I know. The only design part I don‘t really like is the ‚latest‘ version specifier in the spec f

I don‘t know how to think about the other comments concentrating more about coal vs hydroelectric but I went to the grant canyon with my family just this summer (I‘m from Europe) and it is not just a hole in the ground. My kids did the Juni

I‘m 100% with you there. I also think that the problems described are solvable on some levels if not all. I remember the time when brew took of on macOS. I used macports at the time. The reason why people preferred brew was the fact that in

I meant to not starting with the issues of CI but the complexity of it and how many solve it. There is the simple shell script idea which mostly runs on this one CI system and nowhere else. Or the we use a build system which abstracts all k

That is precisely how Unity works already. Yes they have the forums etc. But what gets into a fix release and even if a breaking change gets promoted to an LTS version is decided by big corp license agreement.

I not 100% convinced that profile works either. I tried multiple times to hire for my team which works with a combination of library maintenances build tool development and package management. I even tried a junior developer with an open mi

I tend to check the error handling capabilities of a language to see how expressive and easy it is to return errors. I personally prefer result types over optionales (e.g. the mentioned added context instead of a nothing). It seems that zig

I‘m generally with you here. I also like to learn and do stuff on my own. But there is a catch to some things when self thought. One can read and watch videos for hours and still miss a crucial detail that only a master in the field could t

I used parallels in the past. Mainly to spin up macOS VMs for setup testing with ansible (I maintain a macOS build farm for our studio) And I found the performance decent enough. It all tanks the moment more than one instance is running tho

We had this situation in Germany as well. The providers argued that their routers/etc. are part of their network and the user network starts behind that. If the user wants to use their own router etc they can connect it behind the prov

The wiki has this paragraph: In 1996, it was adopted by W3C for Cascading Stylesheets (CSS) where it was later related at a fixed 3:4 ratio to the pixel due to a general (but wrong) assumption of 96 pixel-per-inch screens I actually never r

The history of the point [1] is equally interesting and messy. Back in school, my old teachers (mostly old printing machine operators, and typesetters) preferred Apple over anything else especially because of the native 72ppi vs windows no

I don’t like the snarky attitude in the post. I don’t work on backend systems but the problem described is similar elsewhere: less knowledgeable or naive programmer writes a feature which looks simple but would create more work to maintain

Seeing a post about XSLT in 2023 :) in the midd 2000th when XML was all the rage I had to learn a lot of this stuff to be forgotten forever :). To be fair I think XML was a good idea with too much complexity and ambition. Our old backend wa

I work with gradle for the better part of 5 years and use it to build Unity projects. I wrote multiple custom plugins and maintain them still. Learning how gradle works was hard. The official docs didn’t help in the beginning. I only know
