Yeah, if you know the TCP/IP networking stack and iptables well enough. For most people, they do not. That's why sysadmins exist ;-) Otherwise, can iptables ban those who failed more than 10 SSH logins?

The problem is often not to download the papers but to find out what paper is good if you are not in the paper's field. The number of citation is usually a good metric but how about recently published papers or draft works ?

Not really, a big website can not cover all keywords in its niche, no matter how big it is. The strategy for small sites is to focus on long tail keywords (3-4 terms) and outrank the big guys.

Doesn't matter. I ditched Apache completely for nginx and didn't look back since then. Every apps get proxied through nginx: PHP scripts run as FastCGI (php-fpm), Rails and Sinatra apps run on Unicorn ...
