Happened twice to me now: weak product team and product definition. Engineering optimistically forges ahead and ultimately gets flogged for not delivering results. Long work hours, micromanaging, and unpleasant work culture. First time exp

2 best years of my 20s were spent getting away from computers altogether. I quit programming in that time and got back in with help from some old coworkers offering me a job. This was after I had a) finished my degree, b) travelled south

All very good points. I had worked some years ago on a prediction market site which attempted to merge 3 mechanisms for gaining collective intelligence: Polling, paramutual betting, and full buy/sell market. It was motived by the fac

I can't help but have a little CueCat-ish response to Glass. I don't wear glasses and don't care to. So Glass saves me from having to take my smart device out of my pocket by having something on my face all day? NB: I'

Even better than git for publishing, I like the "fork" concept as applied to the more general web. Forget copyright issues for a moment... if you could fork sites here it would allow for really fast site creation where you can bu

Just one data point. I'm 35. I did startups in my early 20's, took 2 years off to travel and finish school. Opportunities were still there once I was done. You could say that no work history is the same whether it was due to t

That is definitely another way to do it. You do lose the significance of the HTTP verb, though. One reason i've come to the dedign i proposed is that a web form usually isn't creating and deleting in a single operation, so I use

Excellent article. I've just written up REST API design patterns for our group here and it maps very closely to the guidelines you've outlined. Many other posts about REST design are lacking real world experience items like rate limiting.

Trello doesn't support this feature natively, but there are some third party apps which do. Gmello, Emello are two I know of. Feature request is here and could use a vote. https://trello.com/card/create-cards-via-email/4d5ea62fd76aa...

Perhaps I missed it, but what is the implementation? Is it a web interface which reads gmail? Is it a web-based email @inboxpro.com? I can see a lot of benefit to the features listed, but I can see a big target market where the individual

I'm disappointed to find so few details about the algorithms they're programmed with. Past public installations I've seen like this are visualization of input to ponder. This just seems like random blinkenlights. Doesn't give me much to

Thanks for the data link. I'd consider the difference of 6.1 vs. 4.1 per 100k comparable. I was right about Oakland, though, at 26.3. Even Stockton is higher than SF at 19.7. I'll use that one to back up my fear of bored kids in isolate

I've lived in NYC and SF. SF doesn't have bad neighborhoods, just annoying ones. Crackheads are a nuisance but they aren't very dangerous. Oakland might have some bad neighborhoods. Honestly the burbs scare me the most. I'm probably mor

I use it for a project that is static generated via stasis. Stasis creates a public/ folder with duplicates of JS and CSS files, so I slugignore the originals.

I was just thinking about this today. The web devs I'm working with are talking about ditching Rails entirely in favor of in-browser template rendering by JS. With a backend also in JS, it seems to clearly be a winning development environ

What I got from that comment is that open source begets open source. With all the forking, related projects want to be hosted together. And with all the developers contributing to many projects, it's a social graph with a lot of gravity.

I agree with MetaJack that analysis and execution are two different disciplines. "Quants" use tools like R and Excel, while the models and trading engines are most likely C++ or Java.
