I wish Netflix would come out with a first-party native app for the Mac platform. Silverlight never gained any traction, and if it weren't for Netflix I could get it completely off my Mac.

The problem I foresee is that, by its very nature, The Crossover is intended to have on multiple hosts from other shows, and as such it's likely that he would have to share the episode with people other than Dan. While this could work for s

Given the amount of prep he does for each show I imagine it's very time-consuming, so if that's the reason it's understandable why he wants to stop. However, it's not as though he has to either podcast every week or not at all - he could re

I used to go to a summer camp on Chemo Pond when I was growing up. Not that that's relevant to this conversation, it's just not every day I see a discussion of the area in which I grew up on Hacker News. Nice area. I hope you guys do well.

There doesn't need to be any server-side auth, you could have the opponent's device to check the validity of the word when it's played. If it's not in their dictionary, it rejects the play.

This is actually a really interesting product, but there are very few details. My big concern is one of trust - if I'm going to literally route all my network traffic through this device, how can I trust that it's not doing something nefari

Presumably they'll keep the devices continually updated to keep up with the changing code of websites. Plus, they don't really have to block everything everywhere - this would still be useful even if it only blocked most or even some ads. R

I think programming's a bit different - with an ugly design, the customers see it and know it's ugly. If a software application works fast and flawlessly, the customer sees that it just works, and it doesn't matter if the code has been neat

The Thunderbolt display is expensive, but it also has a lot more than just the panel - it has a webcam, speakers, USB, firewire, ethernet, and a MagSafe connector to charge a MacBook, not to mention that gorgeous aluminum and glass body. Wo

If you're not going to use the screen then it's probably not worth the premium over the MacBook Air for you. However, the rMBP does have other advantages over the Air, namely faster processors and two Thunderbolt ports instead of the Air's

The Displays section of System Preferences says that "using a scaled resolution may affect performance", but if it does it doesn't seem to be noticeable, at least for the kind of stuff that I do.

This is definitely true. Also, it's worth noting that I had to fake the screenshot - screenshots taken in "more space" mode are taken at the res they're rendered at. I took a screenshot of my screen at that res, switched back to "best for r

The way the high resolutions work is that the screen is rendered at 2x then scaled down to fit the display. This does lose a bit of that subpixel antialiasing, so you're right that it doesn't appear quite as crisp as the native retina sca

I think the choppiness of scrolling The Verge was overstated. It's noticeable if you're looking for it, but it doesn't affect the use of the site. And 99%+ of sites scroll smoothly, even when multiple monitors are attached.

If you need more screen real estate, you can change to a different scaled resolution in the System Preferences. If you need it, you can go with an effective 1440x900 or even 1680x1050 resolution. It's not an integer mapping between virtual

According to Apple both variants of the 13" MBP use the same CPUs - either a 2.5GHz i5 or a 2.9GHz i7 - so I imagine the CPU performance is identical between the two. Of course, there might be a bit of a CPU hit for apps having to deal with

Sure, I was just picking a few generic examples, but there's lots of "pro" stuff that doesn't need a super beefy GPU - developing software, editing audio and images, etc.
