I wish we had a TL;DR easily. Those lengthy scientific/history articles are doing a good job at killing any excitement about the core ideas.

They missed the 3rd(!) bug in those few lines of code? The normalization was done before zeroing out the Z component, so the resulting vector isn’t actually normalized.

Where C++ stands out is being wide and leaky at the same time. It allows high level programming, and yet you have to know about all those tiny low level nuances in order to avoid shooting yourself in the foot. In comparison, Java and JavaSc

The CSS engine as well as new renderer from Servo has made it into Firefox successfully. Servo has served well.

If doing cool stuff at home is what drives you, there is only so much time you’ll spend aimlessly binge watching Netflix or playing games, before this drive wakes up and brings you back to do interesting things again.

As often, the guessing about historical reasoning could be all over the place. And not just about WebGPU (oh that never ending “why not SPIRV?” discussion). Claiming that Vulkan and D3D12 were kicked off by a GDC talk about AZDO sounds ridi

Especially annoying when this shows up in Firefox on iOS which doesn’t even support plugins (uBlock) to begin with (since it’s on WebKit there).

Gecko engine looks pretty healthy to me overall. And WebGPU in particular is the least of a concern, given that Firefox's implementation is based on wgpu [1], which has great community and a lot of users within and outside of Rust ecos

This isn’t correct. All 3 parties had prototypes. Mozilla’s first prototype was based on Metal and implemented in Servo. Then we (Mozilla) proposed a Vulkan-like API and had another WIP in Servo, but it was also thrown out.

Don’t expect to see immediate benefit from Rust by writing a small Pong application. Rust gives you confidence at scale: the ability to depend on many 3rd party blocks without compromising stability or performance, the ability to grow and m

There are small teams that are highly effective without PRs, given how little their owned areas intersected. Forcing the PR reviews there would only harm - any knowledge sharing is more effective at the whiteboard, anyway.

Is it really? If I see a game written in, say, Haskell, this grabs my interest. What’s wrong with looking at Rust written software?

I wonder what RMS would say. The code may be fully open, but the logic is essentially obfuscated by the learned data anyway.

It’s not clear where the line to draw about calling corporations behavior to be anti-consumer. Was this falsely advertised? Did anybody promise the online games to live long?

Or maybe the bug was closed as a duplicate of one they were already aware of? Still impolite of them, of course, but we shouldn’t assume the worst.

To follow-up on this, it’s a good habit to never personalize your projects in the first place. Don’t say “my project” unless specifically asked for history or ownership of it. Be “we” everywhere.

Sounds like they are just trying to set up the expectations by drawing the analogy to 3.0 release. It’s happening, it’s going to be slow, incomplete, rough, etc, but we hope to see the community helping to fix it.

Every time, every time I wrestle with C++ compiler on the move constructors/semantics, I open this post[1] by Herb Sutter saying that C++ moves are simple and misunderstood. It's humiliating to read. Finally, somebody dissected a

When would you actually need to not have the max regen braking? You can always just push the drive pedal slightly to let the car know you aren’t slowing down, instead.

In some ECS in Rust (like Specs) there is a concept of a “resource” for this. System declare their use of resources, which allows the scheduler to order them.
