That's not what these "programs" are doing. They're trying to force CS into the curriculum, which is one of the worst things you could do. Offer CS as an elective, sure, that's a great idea, but don't make it mandatory. The only thing you

This "programming literacy" schtick is one of the most absurd pieces of pointless diatribe I have ever heard. We're developers. We make. You buy. That's how it's worked for ages and ages and ages now. You don't need to learn how to code to

I was a bit disappointed in HN when the original post skyrocketed to the top of the front page. It was disheartening to see knee-jerk reactions by the HN community. We've built such an intellectually sound and interesting community; one tha

Did the iPad have features the iPhone didn't? More screen real-estate, but then again, it's like glass. It doesn't do anything my smartphone can't, except give me more room for bigger apps.

Without a doubt, one of the most honourable deeds that a company can do for the rest of the world. The courage and altruism displayed by Rackspace should serve as a reminder to any company: We cannot afford to let patent trolls win.

There is nothing Google Glass does that my smartphone already can't. And how is Apple waging war against openness? WebKit is open-source. They're pushing HTML5 against Flash (open vs proprietary). Darwin (OS X without Quartz and DPS) is ope

Google has overstayed the web's welcome. What started out as a quirky, innovative company that bucked all of the suit-and-tie trends (see Microsoft, HP, even Apple in some regards) of Silicon Valley, has now turned into a monstrous calamity

I use OS X. I develop in Obj-C occasionally (usually it's just GUI mockups), but I still have an old Linux laptop from 2005, and I love using it; I'd daresay using it is more enjoyable than my MacBook Air. I don't think saying that C# is mo

The last post was in August of 2012, the last release was a year ago, and the project is still nowhere near close to completion. It's not dead, but if it still doesn't have enough developers and hackers on board, it will be. Very soon.

Just like Wikipedia has notability guidelines, there's no reason patents should not. Problem is, the legislation to cover vague and broad patents may very well end up being vague and broad itself, unfortunately.
