They keep saying "freeway" but meanwhile it is capped at in-town driving speeds. I guess they mean for those rush-hour durations when everything is at a crawl.

Yes, it was a very different world than it is now. I had a 22 caliber rifle when I was a tween. That wasn't uncommon because I lived in the country, and you pretty much needed such things to scare coyotes and wolves off the yard withou

As someone who has lived here for a few decades, this is really shocking. We've always had some violence here and there, but it seems to have escalated to the point where now we read the news to see if there wasn't some sort of

Yup, that matches my experience. When you realize how conversational ChatGPT is, you adjust the way you use it in order to get good code from it. It doesn't take long to know instinctively what things it gets wrong. When it happens, I

ChatGPT is Wikipedia all over again. It'll give you some really good material to work with, but if you plagiarize it blindly you're gonna get called out for the inaccuracies. It does not analyze its output, so if it has ever seen

Exactly this. Even previous to that, we were told Lisp and Rapid Prototyping would end programming languages like C. And yet C is still here, although it looks quite different and has branched out a whole lot. And Lisp is still here, but ha

There are all kinds of similar stories in history. The synth didn't replace the guitar, even if there isn't much guitar in radio pop music these days. Guitar abounds outside of pop, and isn't entirely diminished from pop eith

Exactly. I was having some serious deja vu. Pretty sure there was someone who was planning to do exactly this with his own "soul." It might have been right here on HN.

In baseball, how is it when players hit the ball, it does not damage their knuckles? The words "fist" and "knuckle" do not even appear on M-W's definition of hit. "Fists" appears in a sample sentence that

They could have done it easier with a simple notch filter. Basically completely remove a frequency that doesn't affect intelligibility for ad purposes, and Alexa ignores anything with that frequency notched out.

I'm not sure if I get the question, but you can use PGP to simply sign a message. That keeps nonrepudiation intact, but you don't need a key to read it otherwise.

Also, "i-Rish makes a cute pun on early Apple naming conventions." How is that not disrespectful? I agree that although Apache wasn't meant to be racist, that doesn't make it not racist.

Consider Replit. They have some 100 days of ... coding tutorials. I'm working through one right now, and it's pretty good. Everything is self contained on the site, too.

This is interesting. They also added LET. It looks like they really want it to be a Lisp. Anyway, the folks who have done artistic and creative things with spreadsheets are going to have a lot of fun with these both in there.

ChatGPT didn't exist in 2021 or prior, so it isn't surprising that it doesn't have specific information about it in the models. It seems counterintuitive, but remember, it's not actually thinking, and therefore doesn
