Make it cheap and no one will care any more. Make it shiny and the tech pundits will slobber all over it. It concerns me for reference. The device is dangerous to say the least. I wish Stallman would write about them as people might start p

You can't get a decent general purpose computer for $250. You might get a laptop shaped kiosk device, but not a computer.

Sorry but Chromebooks are a crap prospect for 99% of people and after about a week, any consumer will realise that. That happens post-sale which means the sales figures are good. They are lured in by the price and get screwed. That's a

My father in law is a security guard for a private company. He watches DVDs for 7 hours a day on a laptop and goes for an amble the other hour. That is the entire job. If only he put some of that time to better use like that kid did. It

Sounds exactly like my EE degree. I left knowing absolutely fuck all other than how to pass a test through cramming yet got a 1st. I didn't deserve it. I spent 5 years the moment I hit industry relearning everything and fudging what I

Lots more energy is lost during power conversion than this. Scary numbers though even if they are ballpark figures.

Yet Linux 3.6 still lasts only 1h15m on idle compared to windows 7 at 4h45m on my laptop. Linux has all powertop optimisations on as well. YMMV

Looks reasonable. However you'll have to prize my HP 50g calculator out of my cold dead hands before I'll mix mathematics and a touch screen.

I've been through about a hundred books on the subject over the years. They are all pretty crappy to be honest so far. There is a great opening here. The problem with electronics is that bar the simplest things, it's pretty maths

For reference, Vala looks like a bastardised C# which compiles down to C which then compiles to native. The whole thing is built on top of Glib and GObject, the latter being akin to gouging your eyes out with a fork. IMHO: use something els

PowerShell is ok until you actually have to use it for something non-trivial, at which point it's the usual "layers-of-pain" that you get with anything Microsoft these days.

It is a joke but the context is actually very valid and is a criticism that is widely echoed everywhere regarding OpenBSD. It deserves a strong defense whether or not it is a joke :)

Whilst Theo is an asshat to people, he's usually right. I've been on the end of it and took it as education. In fact, I wish more people would take the attitude of derision as there are too many people who make excuses for people

I wouldn't dare put my data anywhere near Gmail or Streak. The opportunity for something to go wrong is too high for my liking having dealt with Google "support" before. Considering Streak seems to be a hacked on extension as

I left when they turned up as well and I'm no artist. There was a reasonable tech community around there before it went all trendy as most of us found it pretty cheap and convenient whilst raping the corporations around E1/Docklan
