In Fred Moody's "I Sing The Body Electronic"[0], there is a passage where the author gets to read such postmortem documents and is surprised by the brutal honesty, but does not give any quotes. Now I see what he meant. [0] wh

Merry Christmas! 2018 was kind of mixed bag for me, but the good parts were really good, so I am not going to complain, but look forward to a new year full of the usual surprises and craziness.

Did you maybe mean to reply to some other comment? But just to be clear, I have nothing bad to say about Mister Dillon. I hope my comment did not give you the impression I did.

Also, the developers' attitude. First of all, when somebody reports a bug, they do not try to argue that it is not really a bug or something like that, they fix it. And then, they look through their entire code base to see if that ki

SQLite is used on many platforms, built using many compilers. All of those compilers might have bugs themselves (who am I kidding? They do ), something verification cannot account for.

As opposed to C/C++ compilers being built in C/C++? EDIT: Try to build NetBSD for some esoteric platform from the comfort of your desktop machine. Remember to pick up your jaw from the floow when you're done. ;-) My point is,

With WhatsApp, end-to-end encryption is used by everybody , even though most people probably do not realize it. EDIT: Okay, that came out more snarky than I wanted it to. On the one hand, you are right, of course: Provide a secure, encrypt

Do not take this the wrong way, but I am always a little confused about people feeling about the whole planet-dwarf_planet thing so strongly. Pluto is still out there, just as it was a hundred years ago, when nobody knew it existed. And jus

In Germany, it is illegal to record phone conversations without the consents of the other party. Also, I don't think Oracle is going to sue over something like this. They really seem not to care. But they could change their mind tomorr

I vaguely recall that this was discussed here on HN a while ago and somebody who had actually tried to buy the necessary license reported that Oracle would not sell them the license; IIRC, the sales person told them to "just use it, we

Every time you start a sandbox, it is a fresh environment, so you cannot persist browser history, bookmarks, etc. That may be exactly what you want, but it might come as a rude surprise otherwise.

Based on my personal experiences, cannabis, LSD, and mushrooms are far less destructive than alcohol, which is perfectly legal in many countries. Of course, one can easily destroy one's life with those "soft" drugs. Many pe

AFAIK, countries that have tried loosening the laws on drugs have made good experiences. You would save a lot of money on law enforcement, plus you could tax drugs the way alcohol and tobacco are taxed now. With all that money, you could

Maybe my standards are just very low, but I have had a fairly consistent experience of getting decent second infusions out of fairly pedestrian teas. Maybe the timing has an impact on this, I rarely let my tea sit for more than 60-90 second

Green tea can be infused several times. Usually, the caffeine is pretty much gone after the first round. Plus, with some teas, the finer nuances of taste only come out in the third or fourth infusion. So if you want caffeine-free tea, you c

Just to be sure, I just asked bing.com for "duck". I never, ever, EVER use bing, so unless they get their search results from someone else, they should be relatively unbiased. Once more, duckduckgo.com comes up as the first resu
