For those looking to learn the basics of Lisp and macro programming from the 'bare essentials', you might be interested in my "The Order of Symbols", a WIP course I'm developing: http://busfactor1.ca/

Unfortunately I'm not looking for a Religion, I'm just looking to get my job done. Too much structure can be just as bad as not enough when it comes to programming.

Tried that, couldn't figure out how to get it to work. Still didn't have access to child's state.

That's what I thought until I actually tried. findDOMNode was the first thing I found and then I thought it would be trivial, but the problems of passing child state up to the parent left me befuddled for days.

I don't see how a desire for flexibility (hackability) is a weird argument. But I do see why React works this way to keep the hacking to minimum; unfortunately I needed to 'hack' react to do what I was doing and found it

Writing a 'driver' to integrate my low level UI component library to be usable with React. My major issue was the 'rule' that a parent can't access the 'state' of it's children; this turned a 2 hour

Just my experience. Obviously not one that's common, but I was also doing something quite a bit different than most people that use it, I'm sure.

I've just started playing with React and my general opinion is that it's a very 'Facebook' project. Lots of restrictions on what you can do and when keeping all of the coders in line with what you're supposed to be

Yes, they learn the second syntax from birth. There have been arguments to teach the lisp syntax in mathematics due to it being easier to understand with multiple arguments: (+ x y z a) instead of (x + y + z + a) Also, there are n

Here's a good wiki on the topic: http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?LispLacksVisualCues After a brief period of usage 'the parens disappear' and you just read the code by indentation.

Really, the major difference syntactically is: (f x) vs. f(x) I've never really understood why people seem to have such a hard time with that.
