Couldn't you view the output of the last layer of the convnet used as the embedding in this case? Yes, this was a different approach than leveraging user preferences, but I don't see why this is inherently the wrong approach.

There are so many frameworks, tools and layers of abstraction out there that I find it helps to dip down a layer and taste what life is like without framework or tool X. Ideally, it's quite painful and you immediately appreciate what t

The author states the problem clearly: programmer rusty at linear algebra, needs some background. But at some point, the disdain for pure math / theory becomes a hindrance IMHO. If being human calculator on paper back in college left y

Sure, didn't mean to imply megapixel images were the lower threshold, just that it is more to do with the number of features and the need to automatically extract higher level features.

The benefits of deep learning have more to do with the number of features than the size of the dataset; e.g when you are dealing with million pixel images, you need a deep net to extract useful higher level features automatically. From ther

A lot of interesting points made in this article, but the assertion that trauma plays only a minor role in depression, made in passing, raised an eyebrow. There's quite a bit of evidence that coming to terms with trauma, can be key for
