If you are processing card present transactions, you shouldn't use Stripe, which is priced for online transaction fees. I highly suggest reading up on interchange fees for various cards before taking a swipe at Stripe. 2.9% + $0.30 is

And how are they hitting that person with a tracking pixel and associating it with the pseudo-account? It's still creepy, but it's likely more about determining knowledge of the friend graph (i.e. suggesting 2nd degree friends via

You can absolutely build your own custom "behind the scenes" modules you hook the UI into. I remember prior to Cordova building an app that had native image resizing/uploading code for both iOS and Android, and native notific

I recently tried switching to spacemacs from my custom init.el, and after a half hour switched back. It did inspire me to spend some time improving my setup, but elisp is so simple to work with once you learn it a bit, that there's rea

So I've actually been transitioning my personal communications over to Protonmail (on a custom domain to future proof the address), and keeping Gmail for transactional emails (because of utility in Inbox grouping, Google Now, etc). I&#

Yes, but there are also high traffic sites disseminating US propaganda, corporatist propaganda, etc. The idea of journalistic integrity is pretty much dead at this point, given the monetary value of tapping into/catering to people'

Foursquare solved the issue with gamification (badges). For your dating app example, you could add a non-geographically bounded ranking feature, similar to "hot or not." Basically, creating any sense of accomplishment within the p

Much less of a sex appeal vs a successful B2C startup app. But yeah, typically lucrative business isn't sexy business.

Exactly. They were too beholden to the goal of the debit card to just bump that to a phase 2 feature and finish out the core of the app (chore tracking). If they were able to get actual end users with regular usage and a sub-par payment mod

Actually, they probably should have pushed the banking part to a phase 2, and actually finished building the rest, and opening that up to end users. The debit card is a nice add-on to the concept, but not at all essential to execute the con

Not really. Kickstarter for a software play is a fool's errand in the first place. Kickstarter works best as a marketplace for things that don't yet exist. How does software that is "free" (I'm guessing they planned

I just switched from vim to neovim to evil. I can't see myself ever going back. (Neovim was basically just vim with async support, and terminals, but as a tmux user, that didn't really grab my attention). There's a lot more p

Agreed. I ultimately ended up modifying modelq (a tool that populates a Go text template with your DB schema as the context), and used that to generate CRUD code for my tables instead of dealing with reflection. Turned out really nice. Beeg

Your comment is actually a perfect example of why I have issues with using per capita as the basis of the analysis. I adjusted the OCED numbers to be on a per-gun basis as opposed to a per capita basis and non US OCED countries combined wer

First off, I wasn't in the least presenting it as an actual alternative. I was putting the spree shooting issue in context (much like the terrorism vs falling TVs statistics). Personally, as someone that's rather data driven, I ha

If your only concern is reducing the number of mass shootings, yes, that is exactly (and the only) correct answer from the data. The only reason why the US has more of these shootings is because we have more guns, and reducing the number of

In terms of rampage shootings, the way to reduce the number of shootings is to reduce the number of guns. That's what the data shows. A per capita analysis starts discussions about how the US is different in multiple ways. Oh, well, in

It's disingenuous to compare shootings purely by a per-capita basis. It should be per-capita among gun owners. The data as shown indicates the US has a cultural mass shooting phenomenon, but it's simply not accurate. The US just h
