I'm not going to comment on the Assange case itself since I don't know the details, I'm not a lawyer, and there's so much misinformation out there that it must be almost impossible even for the prosecutors to keep track

Thanks for the explanation! I take it that the open sourced zulip is very close to what zulip.com runs, then?

"You can install a Zulip server on a system with 2G of RAM, but for production use we recommend a system with 4GB of RAM or more." Something has gone horribly wrong when a chat server can barely run on 2G. edit: As a frame of refe

To me, the takeaway lesson is this: Never work under unclear conditions. Make sure you have a contract that spells out the conditions you work under and the salary you will be paid. The second you start giving your labor away for free, you&

Also, I just realized: My employer is looking for Rails people, among other things. Remote workers are more than welcome. I am one myself. More information: https://attachmatehr.silkroad.com/epostings/index.cfm?fuseac..

The whole notion of loyalty is insane. It's a contract. It's not a romantic relationship. Any employer that even mentions loyalty deserves to go out of business.

I am sure this gets frustrating to hear over and over, but it is astonishing how little freedom there is in the land of the free. There is the caricature of the German secret police going 'Papieren, bitte', but how is having to fe

Thanks! As someone who hasn't worked on any JIT compiler, the Schilling paper was very easy to read and comprehend. I'll definitely check out the Dynamo paper too. Haskell seems like an interesting language to implement, being bot

For anyone interested in learning more about Tracing JITs and the problems involved in implementing them should read the paper "Trace-based Just-in-time Compilation for Haskell" by Thomas Schilling [1]. In it, he explains the deta

Well, I think your thoughts on the dark side of human desire and how it relates to fiction are very close to my own. I don't think the article is even close to probing those questions. The article is just drawing a very lazy comparison

No, that is not what I am insinuating. Your reading of my comment is as shallow as the article. I am insinuating that this ability to absorb a narrative and act on it, disregarding the well-being of other human beings, is innate in all huma

I believe ANYONE of us is just a specific set of circumstances away from turning as destructive as ISIS. History proves it. I won't say more to avoid invoking Godwin's law.

There is a parallel, but it is shallow. The author keeps pointing out the differences between the fantasy of Tolkien and the mythology within ISIS, and the more you think about it, the less the comparison holds. Religion, from the outside,

Note that those dates are somewhat oversimplifying things. For example, in Sweden there was something called "same-sex partnerships" from 1995 which legally was equivalent to marriage.
