It's mostly about the construction. The "miracle" part refers to just two clues (filled-in numbers) leading to a unique solution, which is a ridiculously low number.

Interesting idea, but factoring a number does not compress it - the number of digits (binary or otherwise) will stay roughly the same. You can see this using logarithms: a x b = c implies ln a + ln b = ln c. But ln x is proportional to the

A risk existing is not a reason to not start a business - nobody would start one if that was the case. The risks taken by this solitaire company seem to have worked out. They got to earn solid revenue for several years and even with MS back

I find it interesting that so much of the response here is negative, to the tune of "This shouldn't have been part of the HTTP protocol, it's useless". From my point of view, a web where this status code works correctly

Shader languages do not include quaternions as primitives, so if you do have quaternions in your GPU shaders, it's your own code (or a library), not NVidia's. What is usually done in shaders is encoding all transformations (rotati

From what I read, the viruses live in the intestine in bats. So no, only through consumption of bats themselves or contact with their excretions.

While not a viable way to actually do things, it is fun to imagine crazy unicorns like WeWork being taxed on their outrageous valuations.

The article mentions at least one reason why the incentives often aren't aligned: a carve-out agreement that guarantees specific people (often founders) a cut from the "preferred" part of the pie. As I understood it, this cut

It's fun to think about: you have a structure which allows you to iterate all elements in order in O(n) time. Isn't this in many ways equivalent to the structure being "sorted", even if it doesn't have all the prope

Your algorithm doesn't really work for graphs - it actually treats the vertices as a set of points (the edges are not taken into account, you're just looking for the largest Euclidean distance between two points). Unforunately, it

It does apply a little if you extend the definition of "moderation" to include choosing the right set of features in order to direct your users' behavior. That said, I was mostly replying to the parent comment, not discussing

"Choose two out of three" triangles are sexy, but I fail to see how this applies here. Doing nothing doesn't really mean choosing to be impartial and righteous at the same time, and there is no way to both moderate and be imp

Doesn't this also assume that the testers have exactly the same area of responsibility? If you subdivide the work in any way, the probabilities of tester 1 and tester 2 finding a specific bug are decidedly not independent, but very m

PICO-8 (and I assume, TIC-80 as well) are actually great for prototyping bigger game development projects - specifically due to its harsh constraints, which force a limited scope and sharp focus on the design. I'm actually in the proce

There is a lot of material in the article on power-of-two vs non-power-of-two sizes and it definitely includes a discussion of how POT is convenient due to modulo becoming a bitmask (not a bitshift, which would be division).

It was actually precomputed at one point, but there are two things that make it less appealing. They don't feature in the article until part #3, unfortunately. The first is flexible range - the light has adjustable brightness which mak

Calling it a CPU is a simplification, but PICO-8 does emulate limited CPU resources by limiting how much code you can run per frame. Lua code runs at exactly the same speed inside the PICO-8 executable on a PC and in the HTML5 export on a m

No random limits: cdb can handle any database up to 4 gigabytes. Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that the first thing after the "no random limits" heading is a random limitation?
