It's not legal for a US state to declare bankruptcy. There are three relevant parts in the US Constitution that preclude this action. One says that US states are not allowed to abrogate their contractual obligations (pensions, debts,

Dear trend-following worrier, For all the effort you're making know this: you'll eventually be evaluated by a Gen-X or Millennial hiring manager. We largely don't care where you went to college. We've learned that name r

I implemented Agile scrum on my team at the behest of my organization. I did it enthusiastically at first, because I thought it might make a difference. My opinion changed within the first 6 months. I think it's a waste of time. Our

My view is: "You can be 'friendly' with coworkers without being 'friends'." My test for friendship is: "Would I call this person to bail me out of jail?" The answer to that question from me has alw

Independence and reliability are both driving factors for me as a manager. I have a junior dev with 2 years experience and he had to move due to family situation. He asked for permission earlier this year, and I didn't hesitate in say

You can certainly hold hands over Skype/zoom/Slack. I don't think there's a physical proximity requirement for hand-holding.

I have never thought about all-out selling during this. In fact I'm buying more with each dip. I feel that securities are a bargain right now. With select selling I'll also be taking advantage of tax loss harvesting for years t

I didn't get that from the article. As a 15-year engineer who turned manager I would say the list sounds pretty reasonable. The biggest problem, which the article mentioned, I see with junior engineers is the inability to see the "

Very true. If you've solved the labeling/extraction problem using a means other than ML, you can use that means to generate synthetic data. The situation at my company is exactly this. Say you use regular expressions to extract

Hot take: you could hire someone who did absolutely well in the interview, and they could find a few weeks into the job that they loathe everyone, and go on a social media rampage. Nearly every company has a policy regarding socia

I work for an SAP subsidiary and this is the correct answer. You buy SAP software to 1) reduce your chance of getting audited and 2) get through expensive audits quickly. The everyday end-user of SAP software isn't the one it's de

I used Macroquest as well for leveling up tradeskills. I did a few skills manually. Blacksmithing was the worst, and there was no way I would do it manually. I also used ShowEQ for checking whether certain mobs were up in a zone. Looking b

I second this as well. If you're really the type who's talented and motivated, then don't waste that talent and motivation on making someone else richer. Start your own thing. If you don't know how, then learn how. And i

I disagree with you. Both ways work. Starting from theory, or starting from practice. However, in a business setting, starting from practice is much more effective. As a lead dev and a manager who's had over 20 years of experience in A

This is largely true. However, I've been cleaning up and scaling those systems glued together by dilettantes for years. My salary has been increasing, on average, 10-12% yearly for quite a while. I'm in management now and my prima

Bullets have been obsolete for decades. Wars are currently fought by selling shitty financial instruments en masse to your opponents while you sit and watch them implode from afar.

Eh, HAVING is something that can be learned in 5 minutes. So filtering out for that is probably generating a lot of false negatives. I quiz them on indexes and table design. Those can be done without writing a single SQL query.

Learn to be flexible. I've been writing and reading code for 30 years. You'll fight a losing battle if you try to enforce much more than "code must pass tests and work in production."
