It seems to be a bad deal to get a few thousand jobs at the cost of severe damage to the environment and public health, while all the money is shifted out of the country.

While dead brains might be cheaper than electronic, I doubt that growing neurons in a lattice and doing what you want will ever be. There is some research going on in using spintronics for neural network, and I think that both density and p

I would argue that lawful interception is a feature, not a problem. In those cases it is a problem with government insight, the actual problem is the government itself, and there are more pressing problems to deal with, rather than worryi

Ah! I was going to write water pump reservoirs or at some price point electrolysis + fuel cells, but making cheap water in the daytime is also good.

Exactly, while Sahara is obviously sunny and the land is cheap, it might not be the best place to place solar plants, due to the logistics. I think that roof top solar is just as viable in more or less the whole Europe - even in the Nordics

Let's hope they won't use anything else than a 12-gauge with birdshot. A guy in my school was hit in the head while driving. He died instantly. It was a bit of a mystery until they found out he was hit by a stray bullet that went

I think you mean; They will do anything to make money. Selling assorted junk from China and some books with a minimum of friction for the customer is just aligned with that goal.

It's mostly old farts and occationally some retro-hipster that obsess over this. Looking at most young people they are content with streaming unknown quality streams through their brightly coloured headphones of questionable quality. O

How could that be? I stopped buying from Amazon after reading about how they treat their warehouse employees. To me, Amazon just represents monopolistic corporate greed, with no aspiration of caring even just a little bit about anything els

I choose electrical engineering for some weird reason - I don't think it occurred to me that software engineering was a way of making a living even if I had been a hobby programmer since I was 12. Luckily the introductory course was ba

Guidelines are the opposite of a rule-based system, as you are free to use your judgement and use them for comparison only. Guidelines are not a black box that spits out a number of month in prison.

But the point is that it's fake predictability, as you can't make arbitrarily complex rules and hope to have built the Totally Fair System. (Provably not, actually.) The best thing we can do is to admit it's not going to be p

I think you could leak a little 20 years ago too, or use unnecessary amounts of memory - in most cases. It's just a few applications and parts of applications that really are resource constrained and critical enough to really matter...

I must say that I'm fascinated by the fact that each bit is around 1 cm long while in transit, at near the speed of light (in vacuum.) Single channel 100 GB would mean 2-3 mm long bits. Imagine that :-)
