Hardware is always going to fail eventually. Moving to AWS caused NetFlix to write better code to deal with these failures. Failures were always going to happen, even in their own datacentre. What they have now is a more fault-tolerant syst

I would find it interesting if many mobile networks in the world that support many more users and many more messages per second will have even spent $460m on their SMS/MMS infrastructure. I understand that Twitter is different, but 65 milli

This is very impressive. Think of all the BitCoins they could create with a setup like that (I get an average of 50 coins every 26 minutes with http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator.php ). At a current market value of about USD$0.22

Sigh, more sensationalist headlines that really have no content. Unsurprisingly, old technology is old and new technology is new.

It's definitely nice to get a resource like this, but anyone who spends a reasonable amount of time writing applications for Rails should pick up all this. There really isn't that much Magic, it's convention. Think of it like Struts, Spring

I guess, but I don't want to run into the 1KB index size per row limit in MySQL (unless that has changed without me knowing) either and I have other fields I want to index as well.

It's actually a good plan. I'm surprised most secret systems aren't just accessible via thin client without any bulk transfer capabilities.

Wow. No password is safe. If you have an 8 character password using 8 characters from a selection of 80 with a known salt the password would take just 16.5 hours to crack. Much less if you assume a smaller character pool as most people don'

The only feedback I can give you is that if an employer wanted me to complete this process I would look for a different employer. Being treated like a machine even before you are hired by a company would be a gigantic flashing warning sign

Do you really think that either of these would be higher than paying users? There really isn't that much money in ad revenue these days unless you can control the market and have truly massive (ala Google's 400+ million searches a day).
