It's always nice to be able to take something "off the table." If I had an investor that was willing to pay me, directly, for 10 - 20% of my shareholding in a private company whilst additionally adding extra cash, I would take the offer too

CloudFlare is actually a CDN proxy, so you could overcome this by hardwiring your web server firewall rules to the CloudFlare platform.

You obviously didn't get the sarcasm. Having said that, $40m is a lot of money, especially considering it shouldn't have required any extra hardware or even a complete platform change (with expensive licensing). Even at $200k/year that's 10

Sadly, for what you want to do, you essentially need to be a merchant bank yourself. Your business model seems to involve collecting payments on behalf of other people. Most merchant agreements from ANY bank or service provider would prohib

This is amazing. I wonder how they do this? Surely it has to be automated somehow, I just can't imagine anyone building this by hand, even in China.

An interesting article. I am definitely guilty of ignoring all the non-English speaking countries, not just because of the language barrier, but because I'm fearful that I just won't be able to fit in well with the culture.

I'm pretty much in agreement with everything Gruber said (first time for everything). The one thing that really annoys me though is that Apple have decided is that if you offer a subscription-model outside of the app store, you now have to

An interesting dev release. I can see a lot of potential for this product. Specifically I would love lawyers to start using products like this for collaborative editing of contracts (which are very tightly structured anyway). Of course ther

More stable than Ruby? Rails may have started off quite leaky, but to call anything that's been put into production in the past 2 years unstable is just plain FUD.

Actually, FogBugz is trivial to scale - there is never any more than a few dozen, to hundreds of users for any one project. And Copilot wasn't even envisaged or created by Joel, but was rather a project created by some interns. FogCreek doe

I wish I could give you a 1000 up-votes for this. I'm so sick of hearing the rhetoric about language X not being able to scale. Repeat after me, if your app doesn't scale it is YOUR fault, not a language, platform or framework. Scalability

It was Rails and, it wasn't that it wasn't unscalable but because they did it wrong then, they hired a bunch of developers that knew nothing about Rails, so of course they moved a lot of new and core development to other technologies.

You're right, .NET (even though I despise it) scales as well as anything else. Scalability is much more about design decisions than language/platform choice. However, Joel Spolsky is a tool. Everyone I know and respect thinks he's a tool. H
