I think for a lot of people they put on movies in the background to occasionally engage with as they go about other tasks. Myself and my friend circle lean more towards film snobbery than mass market interests. It's not a critical mast

This is a depressing handwave away of what is a pretty thoughtfully written post on the subject from someone who started from your position of skepticism.

Disabling the wallet doesn't satisfy your needs there? I can't imagine it sitting idle on a modern machine would give you the same issues as 'bloatware' does. I do agree in principle though.

The signal-to-noise ratio is bad, but there's definitely meat to the concept if you look deeper.

Have a skim over the high level points covered in the post I linked here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29244992 There is something really novel unfolding right now and HN seems blissfully unaware.

NFTs are just a standard. They can be a part of scams as much as they can function as an authorization scheme in dapps.

The high level points in this blog post do a pretty good job of explaining why web3 is worth paying attention to instead of dismissing as "NFT scam stuff and crypto". https://mirror.xyz/theodorachu.eth/TJU1w2Z

"resigned" is not the term people in this echelon use. Literally just leaving their job for another one, but now they have some breathing room.

~4% of "the great resignation" this year attribute leaving their jobs(and the workforce, or seeking another job) to crypto, and proportionally more among the lowest income. This isn't necessarily a bad thing either IMO. These

My point was that it's beyond simply skirting regulations, as if that is merely the goal unto itself. Something being a regulation doesn't mean it's well conceived or even ethical, and they're frequently abused by incumb

It's insane how quickly things are moving now. The last year has felt like a decade. So many building blocks are in place now that I don't think we'll see another "crypto winter" quite like the last one.

How do you factor DeFi into this? Major existing players may continue to be so in such an ecosystem, but they don't have total control of it and retail gets to play too.

These GPUs will be resold without a doubt. Moving pallets of GPUs and setting up a mining operation somewhere will be quickly noticed. Much better to sell these at markup on Craigslist.

It's wild. HN of a decade ago was very much in favor of anything cypherpunk or otherwise wrestling control away of the Internet away from authorities and corporations. I guess those people "grew up"?
