Can someone outline for me the pros/cons of a mailing list vs. a forum? Except for the registering-over-and-over-again issue, it seems like forums would be preferable generally... (Especially given that most will send you emails with new po

Well, Google's own Postini does spam-filtering. I could imagine a setup where you have people send mail to an alias on your domain, route it into Postini, and then into Google Groups. The big problem would be getting users _not_ to send dir

That's true for 99% of jobs/people. On the jobs front, there are some jobs that (I suspect) have a much higher "cold intro-ing" success rate. "CEO", "Senator", even "Board of Directors" are all probably going to get people interested in you

I'd still like to see more competition than Google vs. Bing... But Google's brand-power is really a strong asset at this point. At this point, I almost like Bing more for wearing away at Google's mind-share than Google's market share. (Of c

I think he was burned a bit by what happened in the Ruby/Rails/Mongrel/etc. situation, and it's even worse when it affects your livelihood, and he lashed out as a result. Outside of that situation, I've heard nothing of good things about hi

Capture the "niche users" and the "common user" will follow... Niche users are usually the early adopters, the experts, and the evangelists to everyone else.

Yeah, I had someone alter the HTML on a static webpage at some point to make it link out to some sites in China. It was a simple site, so I just scanned all the pages to ensure the rest weren't tampered with (it was just index.html). Then I

I'm not sure I'd call C++ verbose...at least, not in the same way Java is. Java takes a lot of characters to express an idea. C++ (usually) requires you to take a big idea and break into smaller parts than Java might (because Java has large

I agree re:scribd. For Windows users, it's trading one bloated reader for another. For OS X and Linux users, it's trading a reasonable decent reader (Preview.app and Evince/etc. respectively) for a bloated reader... If scribd had a download

Yeah, but the API doesn't give you access to those users' gender (since Twitter doesn't ask/store that info), which means you have no way to tell the classifier "Here are 500 males' tweets, here are 500 females' tweets." I suppose you could

Gandi.net should probably be on the list, with their recently-out-of-beta hosting offering. I hear good things, though I can't claim to have tried it myself.

I can't speak much for Constant Contact's control panels and what not. But what I can tell you is that they're on a mailing list that a lot of postmasters are on, and whenever someone has a problem with one of their clients[1], they're very

Linode, currently, thinking about switching or augmenting it with WebFaction. I've used WebFaction before, and they're really good. But they're geared a little more towards frameworks like Django and Rails (but naturally, they do PHP too).
