The title is very misleading, judging the whole userland with this example is just unfair, besides, FreeBSD's one isn't pretty either still the OP choose to only bash on GNU. Also, if you actually read the code it's the --help that takes up

To help the community, aka make the community you're in liking you better so you feel better. Humans are selfish, open source let you be selfish while contributing to humanity.

My statement about OSI was wrong, but Ubuntu is free of charge and will always be. Canonical can't charge for software they have only partly written.

Programming inside the game sounds really interesting. I really hope they focus on 0x10c, although it won't be as big as Minecraft obviously.

Just a note, I think Ubuntu is marketed as an open source OS, the OSI definition says it has to be freely distributed. Strangly enough it's free software that is free as in freedom, not as in free beer, open source is free as in free beer (

You mean unconsciously wanting to get upset about it, or do they really just go around trying to find stuff to hate on?

I don't get who go around and take these "gender issues" seriously. Is it femenists, males, females, trolls? (or something else not listed of course)

Altough I agree with most stuff, I would rather form it so it encourage kids to start early. Starting early is what "talent" really are, the ability to learn.

I learned C as first language. I haven't used it for any real-world work, but it was fun way to get into programming. K&R told me not just C but how to program, then I read TUPE which told me how to effectively use the best development

$ man man # best way to start I could also recommend TUPE[1], it teaches you how to effectively use the command line and write shell scripts. 1. The Unix Programming Environment by Brian Kernighan and Rob Pike.

This seems very similar to plan9 in the goal that a network can be managed as a single system.

Well, OpenBSD is more secure, and are less likely to break. OpenBSD is top quality into its core, even their release model is much better than FreeBSD's.

I don't understand, how can some wacky desktop be harmful to OpenBSD if they introduce low-level dependencies difficult to port over? I don't think any OpenBSD user are even interested in using systemd, pulseaudio or any of those end-user a

Similar things happen here in Sweden. Peter Sunde, the public face of TPB was a activist fighting for less fucked up copyright laws etc. He got blacklisted as a Neo-nazi by Sweden's feds SÄPO. Very sad, but not very suprising.

I meant that you should setup a simple environment, setting up a partition and chroot into it. Learn the kid to use man(1) and ed(1) and after that let him/her play around. I heard someone doing this with his 5 year old kid on the OpenBSD m

What's wrong with learning kids Shell scripting? I think most Unix-like OS's are good for learning, behind the complex layers of abstractions lay the simple command line. Excellent for programming without any distraction.
