From this and Dart, I think one of the lessons here is that SAT solvers are the wrong technique for solving dependencies. SAT solvers find “better” solutions by some metric, but humans using package managers want something which is both sim

The su command is correct for that purpose, as is sudo. This is kind of a subtle point that the article makes—the problem is that “su” is not good for dropping user privileges in general , but it does work if you are a user trying to spawn

Yes, the needs for archives (sole copy) and backups (additional copies of live data) are different. > It is possible to use RAID-5/RAID-6-like encoding schemes that can survive the complete destruction of 1 or even 2 storage centers

Isn’t C the wrong locale, though? Why would I want to use something which is incorrect as the basis for comparison?

Yeah. It gets even more complicated, because tape drives and tape media has different failure rates. At the places where I used tape, we used a more efficient encoding for archival tape backups. Rather than storing 2 or 3 copies, we used fo

When I did the calculations a few years ago, break-even was somewhere around 150 TB, and I don’t think it’s changed too much since then. This is just considering the cost of drives and media. Obviously, the real inflection point is going to

There are tape libraries as small as 3U with 25 slots. That’s a capacity of only 300 TB with LTO-8. It’s not hard to justify if you’re working with stuff like video.

Why would I want to set my locale to “C”? My actual preferences are en_US, and it sounds to me like you’re asking me to misconfigure my shell.

How gross are menus compared to, say, doorknobs, railings, or chairs? There are a lot of things we touch in a restaurant, and I want to know why menus, specifically, are what’s gross.

I definitely notice a speed improvement with Dash. Most shell scripts are too small to notice a difference, but it made a big difference back before the switch to systemd, back when init was a bunch of clunky shell scripts.

It’s harder to source MIDI controllers in that price range, compared to synths.

Yeah, there are a couple exceptions. Roland used to make a popular master keyboard. My main question is why someone would want a $2500 controller, when at that price you could get something like a CP88.

The problem is that pure MIDI controllers are often not very good. When you pay $2,000 for a synthesizer, it can have a very good keyboard.

It takes time to fix this stuff. It always has. I don’t know why. Core audio is the API. You still need a driver for the audio interface. If it’s USB class compliant, then you get a driver for free. Not all devices are class compliant (for

Agreed—I think the economics just don’t justify production of good MIDI controllers. Outside of one or two models, they’re mostly bad. You have to try keyboards out in the store to find one you like. They won’t be a good replica of a piano,
