Hi everyone, author here. Just to note that this is just Part 1 of a multi-part series. I’d love to cover some of the real world applications of Transputers in Part 2 so please share if you think of interest.

Fair enough, but I don’t see how this supports her thinking the internet was a fad not worth investing in. Also it denies agency to those in power in the decades that followed. I mean did that decision bind the policymakers that followed wh

Ah, the Apple has a perpetual royalty free license meme. Almost certainly a myth. Very, very unlikely anyone would get a perpetual license that covers all future products just because they were a founding shareholder. I did some detective w

I think in many ways Arm is (or should be) a sort of large 'Mittelstand' [1] business. Long term focus, independence, customer focus etc are key to the success of this type of business. Trouble is, its success and its sector has g

I sense a degree of disappointment, both in the article and in some of the comments here, that Arm hasn’t made more rapid progress in getting competitive server CPUs to market. It’s clearly not the instruction set architecture. I wonder if

Out of curiosity what’s the cheapest microcontroller die you’ve come across? It would be interesting to know what you get at the lowest possible price point.

I believe the Z8001 and Z8002 are different designs (can't find a die shot of the Z8001 but Z8002 die only has 40 pads). Zilog could have gone down the 6507 style route, I guess, but the Z8002 would have been more expensive to produce.

I don't think the YKK video is there yet but Jon also provides transcripts for many of his videos on his Substack, which might me more to your taste. Here is the one for the history of Intel and AMD. https://www.asianometry.

Risk / reward though. What's the reward? Are the alternatives better than Nvidia? Doesn't seem so and the risks are significant. On the other hand if you can't get H100s then nothing to lose!

I really don't get this sort of take : the world's most valuable company and a startup backed with $100m+ shouldn't have to pay for the IP that they use? Will Esperanto be giving their IP away for free and letting other firms

Ah Ok. Agree with the amended version! FWIW I think it’s unlikely that being a founder has any impact on current terms - we’re now thirty years on and several new licenses on now. Being a huge high profile customer will have an impact so Ap

Thanks for the feedback. The article does say that that Facebook Messenger used Erlang. I've amended the comment on the jit compiler to say 'updated jit compiler' - my mistake.

My interpretation of 'take over' would be a majority of new server installs would be RISC-V based. There is a lead time for development, orders etc plus customers have to be content to switch to a new architecture. Amazon's A
