Anyone can respond to emergencies in front of them. It's the great ones that can see ahead to upcoming challenges and take care of them proactively. Unfortunately, it's the emergency-du-jour people that always seem to be saving the day, whi

I should have clarified, I lumped electronic checks in with physical ones in understanding the parent's point. I use electronic checking transfers to pay my rent, not physical handwritten checks. Most bills in the US (including rent) have a

Debugging SOAP stuff is a complete nightmare, but trying to figure out and implement somebody's RESTful API that has 100 different types of objects is also a hassle, since there isn't code generation that can help you. For tiny one-API-call

I see that you offer a 14 day free trial. How does someone go about doing a trial of software that transforms the entire process of running an apartment building? You get all your tenants to sign up with this system, then change your mind a

Banks charge 1-2% as a credit card fee, but no fees for using checks. In my building, they pass the fee along to me (the tenant), so it's in my best interest to pay by check.

If they gave in so easily, definitely should have asked for more, although it's always hard to know what to ask for when it's your first "real" job. After that you have a baseline to help figure out what you're worth.

I worked for a company where there were a bunch of Engineering Leads with no direct reports. Makes no sense, I realize, but titles rarely do. You might want to make that a checkbox.

Very cool idea. As someone who works out 5-6x/week, I'd love to sign up for a gym that has that model. ;) 4x/week seems a little much for people that are trying to start out. I'll be curious to see how their plans evolve through market feed

Agreed. Especially since most cases similar to his argument are retargeting, not query leakage. In his example, if the user actually clicked directly from Google to Wikipedia, Google would be the only one who knew about the user's interest

In many cases, ads are loaded in iframes, which hide the referrer from the ad network. It's not in all cases, but most big publishers don't want malformed ad network JavaScript to destroy their entire page, so they wrap ad calls in iframes

Everywhere I've worked, the first step to hiring a new developer is to ask all the good developers if they have any friends that are also good and interested in work.

I don't know much about Financial Engineering, but most business fields value experience the most, with degrees being a way to get your foot in the door. Startups are much more flexible, and probably provide a better opportunity for someone

Great article, especially for engineering managers. There's always a temptation to do something manually since it's quicker now, but in the long term all that time adds up fast.

It's good to try out different ideas, but be careful not to give up on one and switch to something else too easily. Every project is going to have a period where it sucks, nobody's using it, and you don't want to work on it anymore. If you

I have my doubts. One main criticism of Groupon and other daily deal companies is that their business is much less defensible. Aside from the size of their email lists, there's no reason a small business shouldn't go run their daily deal on

Aside from some delusional PMs at TV manufacturers, I don't think too many people think connected TVs are the future. More likely, it's features they can add cheaply to existing products to add more showroom bullet points.

Good job pointing out the effect on your family. Bootstrapping is more than just a pay cut when your spouse and/or children will be affected as well. Discussing the potential risks with them is 100% necessary before taking a major leap.
